About IIT Bhubaneswar

Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar came into existence on 22 July 2008, one of the newer IITs. Its permanent campus at Argul covers 936 acres at the foot of Barunei Hill, and it runs on the IIT model of schools rather than departments: Basic Sciences; Earth, Ocean and Climate Sciences; Electrical and Computer Sciences; Humanities, Social Sciences and Management; Infrastructure; Mechanical Sciences; and Minerals, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, plus an Integrated Teacher Education Programme and a Research and Entrepreneurship Park.

The scale is modest. In the 2023-24 data the institute gave to India's national ranking framework (NIRF), it had 1,390 students on four-year undergraduate programmes, 548 on five-year programmes, 595 on two-year postgraduate programmes and 450 full-time PhD students, taught by 201 faculty members. NIRF 2025 placed it 80th in the Overall category and 39th in Engineering.

B.Tech students choose from Civil, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, Engineering Physics, Mathematics and Computing, Mechanical, and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. For every undergraduate route the gate is the same: a qualifying rank in JEE (Advanced) and a seat through the JoSAA counselling process. It suits applicants who score well in that exam and are comfortable on a large, quiet, largely residential campus south of the city.

Why students choose IIT Bhubaneswar

01

B.Tech admission is by rank alone through JEE (Advanced) and JoSAA, with no separate institute-level application, interview or essay.

02

Eight B.Tech programmes include newer options such as Engineering Physics and Mathematics and Computing alongside the core branches.

03

The 2023-24 graduating B.Tech batch reported a median salary of Rs 14,00,000 per year among placed students (254 of 321 graduating in minimum time, per NIRF 2025 data).

04

Financial support is built into the fee structure: full tuition waiver for SC, ST and PwD students, and full or two-thirds tuition remission for students from families earning below Rs 1 lakh or Rs 1 to 5 lakh a year.

Admissions

2026-27 intake (entry 2027 dates not yet published)

Selectivity

IIT Bhubaneswar does not publish an acceptance rate. Admission is by JEE (Advanced) rank through JoSAA, so selectivity is set by national rank cut-offs rather than an institute decision. NIRF data show 355 sanctioned first-year B.Tech places in 2020-21 (335 admitted), rising to 403 four-year places plus 123 five-year places in 2023-24.

Testing JEE (Advanced) is required for B.Tech and dual degree programmes; candidates must first qualify through JEE (Main) (top 2,50,000 candidates in the B.E./B.Tech paper for the 2026 cycle) unless they are foreign nationals registering directly.
Grades No school-grade cut-off is used for B.Tech admission beyond the Class XII eligibility rules set by JEE (Advanced).

Typical entry requirements

JEE (Advanced) rankSeat allocated through JoSAA by rank, category and programme; admission to all B.Tech programmes is through JEE, as stated on the institute's B.Tech admission page
Class XII (or equivalent)For JEE (Advanced) 2026 a candidate had to appear in Class XII (or equivalent) for the first time in 2025 or 2026 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects; the age limit was birth on or after 1 October 2001 (five years relaxation for SC, ST and PwD) and a maximum of two attempts in two consecutive years
Foreign nationalsSeats for foreign nationals are supernumerary, capped at 10% of seats in every course; foreign nationals follow separate eligibility criteria published on the JEE (Advanced) website, and online direct registration for them opened on 6 April 2026 in the 2026 cycle
English language No English test score is listed on the institute's undergraduate admission pages.

How to apply

Register for JEE (Advanced) on jeeadv.ac.in (after qualifying through JEE Main, or by direct registration for foreign nationals), then register and fill choices on the JoSAA portal, pay the seat acceptance fee, upload documents and report to the institute. The institute's admission page also notes that foreign students can apply to Indian institutes through the Study in India programme.

What admissions looks for

  • A qualifying JEE (Advanced) rank that reaches the closing rank for your chosen programme and category in a JoSAA round.
  • Eligibility under the JEE (Advanced) rules: Class XII with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, attempt limits and age limits.
  • For foreign nationals, compliance with the separate foreign-candidate criteria and the supernumerary 10% cap per course.

Tips for applying to IIT Bhubaneswar

  1. 1 Understand that there is no institute application: your JEE (Advanced) rank and JoSAA choice order decide the seat, so the order in which you list programmes matters.
  2. 2 If you are not an Indian citizen, read the foreign-candidate eligibility page on jeeadv.ac.in early; its criteria differ from those for Indian nationals.
  3. 3 Check the fee notice for your citizenship band: SAARC and Least Developed Country nationals pay Rs 2.0 lakh a year in tuition and other foreign nationals pay Rs 6.0 lakh.
  4. 4 Keep an eye on the undergraduate fee notices on the institute's site, as registration fees were revised by a later notice after the 2025-26 schedule was published.
