Sign up to see your chancesIndian Institute of Science Education and Research Pune is a public, research-focused institution established by the Government of India in 2006 and designated an Institute of National Importance in 2012. Its central undergraduate offering is a five-year BS-MS dual degree that combines broad preparation across the sciences with advanced study and a year-long research project. IISER Pune also offers two-year master’s, integrated PhD and PhD pathways. The institution is based on a residential campus in Pashan, Pune, near several scientific and academic organizations. It is best suited to students seeking substantial laboratory, computational or theoretical research experience rather than a conventional professionally oriented university curriculum. Applicants should compare routes carefully: undergraduate admission is coordinated centrally through the IISER Aptitude Test, while master’s and doctoral selection requirements differ by programme and department.
About Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Pune
IISER Pune was established in 2006 by the Government of India’s Ministry of Human Resource Development, now the Ministry of Education. It became an Institute of National Importance through national legislation in 2012. It is an autonomous, degree-awarding institution rather than a department of another university, and it remained operational with active admissions during 2026. The institute’s purpose links science teaching closely with research. Its five-year BS-MS programme begins after Class XII or an equivalent qualification, while its postgraduate portfolio includes two-year master’s programmes, integrated PhD routes and departmental PhD programmes. The official 2026–27 master’s admissions material identifies Chemistry, Quantum Technology, and Mathematics and Computing as the master’s options accepting applications for that year. Doctoral opportunities span areas including Biology, Chemistry, Data Science, Earth and Climate Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Science Education, although the departments and research areas recruiting students can vary by intake. IISER Pune moved fully to its permanent Pashan campus in 2014. The institute describes it as a 98-acre residential campus with teaching and research laboratories, lecture facilities, a library, student housing, dining, recreation and medical support. This concentrated setting makes research and campus life closely connected. Prospective students should nevertheless assess the specialized character of the institution: its academic structure is centered on science, research training and progression to advanced study, not the broad professional and vocational range found at a comprehensive university.

How Admissions Work
Admission to the five-year BS-MS is coordinated centrally across the IISER system. For 2026, applicants had to take the IISER Aptitude Test. The official IAT 2026 brochure allowed Indian nationals, OCI/PIO applicants and foreign nationals who passed or were appearing in an eligible Class XII-equivalent or qualifying diploma examination in 2024, 2025 or 2026. BS-MS applicants needed at least three subjects among Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics in the qualifying examination. Candidates should use the central portal for allocation and counselling rules rather than apply to IISER Pune directly through a separate undergraduate process. Graduate admissions are programme-specific. For the August 2026 Chemistry master’s intake, applicants needed an eligible bachelor’s degree with Chemistry and a valid JAM 2026 Chemistry result. Mathematics and Computing used an institute-based multiple-choice admission test. Doctoral requirements varied substantially by department, commonly combining a relevant qualifying degree with a national examination, fellowship or an Institute of National Importance exemption, followed by shortlisting and interview. Meeting minimum criteria did not guarantee an interview or selection. International applicants had a separate Study in India route for a small BS-MS allocation and could apply directly for international PhD consideration under the institute’s published process. As of 20 August 2026, the application deadlines shown for these 2026–27 undergraduate, master’s and August PhD routes had passed. Future applicants should wait for the next official cycle and should not reuse the 2026 dates or subject-specific openings.
Academic Experience
The five-year BS-MS dual degree is IISER Pune’s main undergraduate pathway. Its curriculum integrates biological, chemical, mathematical and physical sciences, with exposure to earth science, humanities and foundational or transdisciplinary work. Students initially study across disciplines before moving toward advanced choices and, where applicable, a major. The programme comprises eight semesters of lecture, laboratory and project-based study followed by two semesters devoted to a master’s research project. That final project may be undertaken at IISER Pune or, subject to the programme’s arrangements, at another research laboratory in India or abroad. At master’s level, the official 2026–27 admissions page lists programmes in Chemistry, Quantum Technology, and Mathematics and Computing. These are separate two-year postgraduate routes rather than the master’s component of the integrated BS-MS. Their curricula and selection methods differ: for example, the 2026 Chemistry intake used JAM Chemistry in shortlisting, while Mathematics and Computing used an institute admission test. Applicants should consult the individual programme page rather than assume one common graduate process. The PhD combines coursework, research and undergraduate mentoring. The institute states that doctoral students generally complete at least 16 coursework credits during their first two semesters before a comprehensive examination. Research areas extend across the natural sciences and mathematics as well as data science, humanities and social sciences, and science education. Modern laboratories, computational facilities, seminars and workshops support this work. Recruitment is department-specific, so the availability of supervisors and topics in one admission cycle should not be treated as a permanent catalogue.

Student Life & Environment
IISER Pune describes itself as a fully residential campus, so housing, dining, academic work and recreation are concentrated in one setting. Student hostels and a central dining facility form part of the permanent campus. Housing is also offered on a shared basis to students admitted to the 2026–27 BS-MS through the Study in India channel, but applicants in every category should confirm their own allotment terms directly rather than infer a universal room guarantee. Recreational infrastructure includes outdoor courts and grounds for sports such as tennis, basketball, volleyball and cricket, along with an indoor gymnasium and badminton facilities. The campus hostel information also identifies a music room and opportunities for cultural programmes and social engagement. Health support includes a campus wellness clinic, medical and paramedical staff, first aid and an ambulance service; details of coverage and outside treatment should be checked against current institute rules. The residential format can suit students who want frequent contact with peers and research activity, but it also means that hostel and dining arrangements are important parts of the practical decision. Prospective students should review the current hostel rules, room-sharing arrangements, mess charges and medical-insurance terms before enrolling. The official material supports the availability of these facilities but does not provide enough current detail to compare room types or living costs reliably.
Location & Surroundings
IISER Pune occupies a 98-acre campus in Pashan in western Pune, at Dr. Homi Bhabha Road, Pune 411008. The institute moved completely to this permanent site in 2014 after operating from temporary facilities, including space associated with the neighboring CSIR–National Chemical Laboratory. The surrounding Pashan, Baner and Aundh area is an established academic and research cluster. Nearby organizations identified by the institute include the National Chemical Laboratory, Savitribai Phule Pune University, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics and the National Centre for Cell Science. This proximity may support seminars, collaborations and access to a wider scientific community, though individual opportunities depend on departments and supervisors. The campus combines an urban location with nearby hills and institutional green space. A city bus stop is located outside the main gate, while outsourced institute vehicles and ambulance services are also available for designated purposes. Applicants should independently check current commute times and transport routes when planning travel, particularly because Pune traffic conditions vary by time and neighborhood.
Costs & Career Outcomes
IISER Pune publishes separate fee schedules for the BS-MS, integrated PhD, MSc and PhD programmes, with distinctions between the first semester and later semesters where applicable. The official fee page links current schedules, refund rules and financial-aid information, but its indexed text does not clearly identify the applicable intake beside every linked document. For that reason, applicants should obtain the schedule attached to their own 2026 offer or later admission cycle before budgeting. Costs may include tuition or academic charges, hostel-related charges, mess costs, insurance and one-time payments, and the institute notes elsewhere that fee structures may be revised. International students admitted to the BS-MS through the Study in India route are charged the fee applicable to Indian students of the corresponding batch and receive shared hostel accommodation. The international PhD page states that up to six international fellowships may be available at the level of IISER fellowships and that tuition waivers may be considered for meritorious students facing financial hardship. These are conditional provisions, not guaranteed awards. The institute also links students to the PM-Vidyalaxmi education-finance scheme. Career support is provided through the Career Development and Placement Cell. Its stated services include career exploration, skills development, sharing opportunities and informing students about relevant events and competitions. The available official page refers to a 2024–25 placement cycle but does not publish sufficiently current placement rates, salaries or employer outcomes for 2026. Students should therefore view the cell as a support service and ask for programme-specific destination data, especially when comparing research careers, doctoral study and private-sector employment.
