Sign up to see your chancesIndian Institute of Management Calcutta is a public, postgraduate business school in Joka, Kolkata. Established in 1961, it operates independently under India’s statutory framework for the Indian Institutes of Management and is authorized to award degrees. Its principal degree offerings are a two-year residential MBA and doctoral study in management, alongside executive and collaborative programmes with differing award arrangements. The MBA combines a compulsory management core, an industry internship and second-year electives. Students in residential programmes live on a campus with academic buildings, hostels, sports facilities, a management library and student-run organizations. Applicants should distinguish carefully among programmes: eligibility, selection tests, fees, financial support and the final credential vary substantially. IIM Calcutta does not offer a conventional portfolio of undergraduate degrees, despite the bachelor-level entry requirement for its postgraduate programmes.
About Indian Institute of Management Calcutta
IIM Calcutta was incorporated in November 1961 and began operating in 1962. Its establishment involved the Government of India, the Government of West Bengal, MIT’s Sloan School of Management, the Ford Foundation and Indian industry. It was the first Indian Institute of Management to be established. Today it is governed within the framework of the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017, which treats IIM Calcutta as a separately incorporated institution of national importance and gives covered institutes degree-awarding authority. The institute is a specialist postgraduate management institution rather than a comprehensive university. Its current portfolio includes the two-year MBA, a full-time PhD, an Executive PhD, the MBA for Executives, and collaborative offerings such as the Post Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics and the programme for executives in manufacturing. Prospective students should not assume that every offering leads to the same type of award. For example, PGDBA is explicitly a diploma, while the MBA and doctoral programme lead to degrees. The MBAEx page also states that the final status of its certificate is contingent on deliberations with the Ministry of Education, so applicants should verify the award before enrolling. The institute’s official address is on Diamond Harbour Road in Joka, Kolkata. Much of the student experience is organized around a residential campus, particularly for the flagship MBA and other full-time programmes.

How Admissions Work
Admission requirements depend on the programme and applicant category. For the MBA batch of 2026–28, domestic applicants generally needed a recognized bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA; the published threshold was 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Final-year applicants could apply subject to the institute’s specified completion and document deadlines. The domestic selection process used CAT 2025, followed by shortlisting for a Writing Ability Test and personal interview. Academic records and gender diversity contributed to shortlisting, while final selection also considered the interview, writing test, academic diversity and eligible work experience. Published minimum CAT percentiles were only thresholds for consideration, and the institute warned that actual cutoffs could be higher. For the same 2026–28 batch, the institute defined overseas candidates separately. These applicants required an eligible bachelor’s qualification and a qualifying test-centre GMAT score. The official policy specified an overall score of at least 735 and minimum scores of 89 in each of Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Data Insights; at-home online GMAT results were not accepted. Foreign-degree equivalence had to be certified by the Association of Indian Universities. These rules apply specifically to the 2026–28 MBA cycle and should not be generalized to the PhD, executive or collaborative programmes. Future applicants must consult the policy for their own intake because tests, score rules, documentation and dates can change.
Academic Experience
The flagship MBA is structured in two stages. During the first year, students complete compulsory work across economics, finance, marketing, operations, systems, organizational behaviour, human resources, strategy and public policy. An eight-week industry internship between the first and second years is a programme requirement. The second year emphasizes electives, and students may also undertake supervised term papers. This design suits applicants seeking broad general-management preparation with room for later academic choice rather than an early, fixed specialization. IIM Calcutta also offers a full-time PhD intended for advanced management study and research. The official programme portfolio lists an Executive PhD beginning from the 2025–26 academic year. At the postgraduate level, the one-year residential MBA for Executives is aimed at experienced professionals, while collaborative programmes include PGDBA with IIT Kharagpur and the Indian Statistical Institute and PGPEX-VLM with partner institutes. PGDBA combines management, statistics and computing but awards a postgraduate diploma, so it is not included in the verified degree-level classification. Teaching and assessment vary by programme. The MBA page describes core courses, electives, supervised work and an applied internship. The doctoral programme provides access to the B. C. Roy Memorial Library, research databases, dedicated computing facilities and support for conference participation and field research. Applicants should compare programme-level curriculum, residency requirements and award status rather than treating the institute’s offerings as interchangeable.

Student Life & Environment
Student life is closely tied to the residential Joka campus. IIM Calcutta states that students in residential programmes receive on-campus accommodation, with residence halls providing study and social spaces. Academic buildings include classrooms, group-study areas, conference facilities and a business and engineering library. The campus also supports wireless connectivity and collaborative learning facilities. An elected Student Council represents students and works with faculty and administrators. Its responsibilities include academic concerns, hostel matters, placement-related activity, media representation, and cultural and sports programming. The institute published a council roster for 2025–26, providing evidence of an active student-governance structure rather than merely a historical description. Clubs and interest groups cover business functions, culture, sports and social initiatives. Official student-life material identifies finance, consulting, marketing, systems, entrepreneurship, music and photography activities, as well as seminars and workshops. Sports infrastructure is described for activities including football, tennis, basketball, volleyball, cricket and swimming. The experience is likely to be intensive: the residential model places classes, group projects, clubs, recruitment preparation and peer interaction in the same environment. Facilities and housing arrangements can differ by programme, so admitted students should rely on their programme’s current joining information.
Location & Surroundings
IIM Calcutta is located at Joka on Diamond Harbour Road, Kolkata 700104, in the Indian state of West Bengal. This is the institute’s principal residential and academic campus. Official descriptions place classrooms, faculty and administrative offices, student residences, the B. C. Roy Memorial Library, an executive-training complex and recreation facilities within the campus. The setting is characterized by substantial greenery and several lakes. This gives residential students a contained study environment in which teaching, group work, clubs, sports and housing are concentrated together. It also means that applicants should evaluate the Joka location itself, rather than assuming the institute occupies a central-city Kolkata site. Daily routines for full-time students are largely campus-based, while access to the wider metropolitan area provides the broader cultural and commercial context of Kolkata. Prospective students should confirm programme-specific accommodation and arrival guidance before travel. The institute’s published address should be used for planning, and international students must separately account for Indian visa and immigration requirements relevant to their programme.
Costs & Career Outcomes
IIM Calcutta had not published a clearly identified current domestic MBA fee for the 2026–28 batch in the official material reviewed, so applicants should obtain the offer-year fee schedule directly from the institute before making a financial decision. The overseas admissions page reports that the preceding MBA batch cost USD 65,000 for two years, including hostel fees, plus a refundable INR 20,000 caution deposit. It also labels this as the fee for the last batch, so it should not be treated as a confirmed 2026–28 price. Living, insurance and personal costs were additional. Funding differs by programme. Official information states that scholarships are available to eligible MBA students under sponsor-specific criteria and through Government of India schemes, while the institute’s transparency page refers to support for students in financial need. Full-time doctoral students are charged no tuition and receive stipends and research-development support under the terms published by the doctoral programme. Those benefits should not be assumed for MBA or executive students. Career preparation is built into the MBA through a compulsory eight-week internship and institute-facilitated placement activity. The MBA page describes student mentorship for résumé preparation, interviews and recruitment, supported by professional clubs. Its most recent detailed final-placement figures on that page concern 2023 and are therefore not presented here as current outcomes. Applicants should request the newest audited or institute-issued placement report and examine role mix, location, compensation definitions and cohort coverage rather than relying on older headline figures.
