About Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Kancheepuram
IIITDM Kancheepuram was established in 2007 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, with a mandate centered on design- and manufacturing-oriented engineering education and research. It operated initially from a temporary location at IIT Madras and moved to its permanent campus near Chennai in 2011. It is an Institute of National Importance rather than a department or satellite campus of another university, and it independently awards undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees. The institute’s defining feature is the combination of information technology with product design, development, prototyping and manufacturing. This focus appears across its academic structure rather than being confined to one design course. Computing, electronics, mechanical engineering, basic sciences and interdisciplinary design are represented in the current program portfolio, with experiential and interdisciplinary learning emphasized by the institute. The permanent campus covers 51 acres off Vandalur–Kelambakkam Road on Chennai’s outskirts. Official material describes it as fully residential and identifies academic, administrative, lecture-hall and laboratory blocks. This creates a concentrated campus environment, though students looking for a central-city experience should recognize that the institute is outside Chennai’s urban core. As of August 2026, official pages show active undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD admissions, confirming that the institution remains operational.

How Admissions Work
For 2026 undergraduate entry, admission to B.Tech and combined B.Tech–M.Tech programs was conducted through JoSAA and CSAB using JEE Main rank. Applicants first participate in the relevant centralized allocation process and then complete institute reporting, document uploads and fee formalities after receiving a seat. International undergraduate applicants were directed to the DASA route or the Study in India program. Candidates must follow the rules and schedule of their applicable route rather than treating the institute portal as a standalone application. M.Tech admissions in 2026 used CCMT, followed by an institute-level spot process for remaining vacancies. The published spot notice allowed both GATE-qualified and non-GATE-qualified applicants, subject to degree-specific eligibility; this was a vacancy-filling route and should not be assumed to recur unchanged. M.Des Integrated Product Design had a separate July 2026 process associated with CEED-category seats and institute applications. PhD admission is handled directly by the institute by session and discipline. The July 2026 cycle included shortlisting followed by discipline-specific written tests or interviews. Its application deadline and selection calendar have already passed and must not be used for a later intake. Prospective students should use the live admissions pages for the next cycle because deadlines, eligibility mappings, required examinations and available categories differ by program.
Academic Experience
The 2025 curriculum listings include B.Tech options in Computer Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering with a major in Artificial Intelligence, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Smart Manufacturing, Design Engineering and Engineering Physics. The institute also offers combined B.Tech–M.Tech routes in computer science, electronics and communication systems, electronics and VLSI systems, and mechanical engineering with AI and robotics. At postgraduate level, M.Tech study covers Data Science and Artificial Intelligence; Communication Systems; Microelectronics and VLSI Systems; RF and Microwave Engineering; Intelligent Mechanical Systems Design; and Smart Manufacturing. An M.Des in Integrated Product Design provides a design-focused alternative to the engineering master’s routes. Doctoral opportunities span computer science, electronics and communication, mechanical engineering and basic-science fields; the July 2026 admissions cycle also listed Interdisciplinary Product Design and an English stream under Sciences and Humanities. The curriculum is designed around interdisciplinary and experiential learning using contemporary information-science tools. Students can therefore expect boundaries between software, electronics, physical products and manufacturing systems to be less rigid than at a conventional single-discipline engineering college. Current academic infrastructure includes departmental laboratories, an Institute Computer Centre and an Institute Instrumentation Centre. Applicants should review the curriculum attached to their exact intake year: the official program page displays both earlier and 2025 syllabi, and available subjects or seat allocations can change between admission cycles.

Student Life & Environment
IIITDM Kancheepuram is structured as a residential institution. The 2026–27 fee schedule states that hostel residence is compulsory for B.Tech, dual-degree, M.Tech, M.Des and PhD students unless the institute grants an exemption. The Hostel Office manages dormitories and dining halls, with separate wardens identified for boys’ and girls’ accommodation. Students should therefore treat housing and mess arrangements as a core part of enrollment rather than an optional add-on. Technical activity is prominent outside class. The institute’s 2026–27 placement brochure identifies student communities in computing, software development, robotics, embedded systems, cybersecurity, entrepreneurship, drones, autonomous underwater vehicles, rover development, electric vehicles and aeronautical design. These groups emphasize projects, workshops, competitions and interdisciplinary teamwork. Cultural activities are coordinated through the Student Affairs Council, including cultural clubs and a SPICMACAY student chapter. Sports facilities listed by the institute include a gymnasium, cricket and football grounds, basketball, tennis and volleyball courts, table tennis and badminton facilities. Residential students are organized into six houses for participation and competition. The campus also provides formal student-affairs, counselling, anti-ragging and grievance channels, although prospective students should consult the latest notices for current officeholders and procedures.
Location & Surroundings
The institute is in Melakottaiyur, off Vandalur–Kelambakkam Road, with the postal address Chennai 600127. Although its name refers to Kancheepuram, official materials consistently describe the permanent campus as being on the outskirts of Chennai. It moved there in 2011 after initially operating from IIT Madras. The 51-acre site is a self-contained residential campus with academic, administrative, lecture-hall, laboratory, hostel and dining functions. This arrangement can reduce the need for daily commuting and supports evening club, laboratory and sports activities. It also means the setting differs from studying in central Chennai: students should plan journeys to major city destinations and transport hubs rather than assume they are within walking distance. Chennai provides access to a major Indian metropolitan and industrial region, which fits the institute’s emphasis on electronics, computing, product design and manufacturing. However, the official sources reviewed do not provide sufficiently current travel times, public-transport frequencies or airport and railway connections, so applicants should verify routes for their arrival date.
Costs & Career Outcomes
For students admitted in 2026–27, the published first-semester total for B.Tech and dual-degree programs is INR 149,796, combining INR 109,300 in institute charges with INR 40,496 for hostel and advance dining charges. The institute notes that dining charges may vary with tender values. Tuition exemptions apply to SC/ST students and, for four years, to PwD students under the conditions stated in the schedule. For the 2026–27 M.Tech and M.Des intake, the listed first-semester hosteller total is INR 108,496. Tuition is INR 50,000 per semester in the first year and INR 60,000 per semester in the second year. The corresponding PhD hosteller total is INR 106,496 for the first semester. These figures are intake-specific, include one-time items, and should not be multiplied mechanically to estimate the entire degree. Students should also budget for personal expenses, travel and later-semester changes. The Training and Placement Cell coordinates employer invitations, pre-placement talks, interviews and internships with faculty and student representatives. Technical clubs and project teams provide additional applied experience in software, electronics, robotics, product design and vehicle development. The institute’s public placement page mixes undated “current” figures with a clearly labeled 2022–23 table, so no current placement rate or salary claim is presented here. Candidates should request a dated, program-level outcome report before relying on placement statistics.
