Student Life & Environment

Student experience at IGNOU is decentralized and usually shaped more by a learner’s regional centre, assigned learner-support centre and digital services than by daily life at the New Delhi headquarters. Learner-support centres provide face-to-face academic counselling and may host practical work, assignment-related services or other program-specific activities. Regional centres oversee these locations and connect students with university divisions. The Student Services Centre coordinates enquiries and works across registration, evaluation, study-material distribution, regional services and academic schools. Formal grievance routes include IGNOU’s own grievance system and government or higher-education portals. Students can also use eGyanKosh, the university’s mobile e-content service, online administrative systems and library resources. Access to particular physical resources may depend on the learner’s program and location. Career and community activity exists, but it is not equivalent to a conventional residential-campus experience. The Campus Placement Cell runs recruitment events for eligible students and alumni, including national and New Delhi drives held in 2026. Academic broadcasts, webinars and regional activities can create additional points of contact. Applicants seeking clubs, athletics, residential housing or a highly social campus routine should verify what is actually available through their intended regional and learner-support centres; the January 2026 common prospectus does not document a general student-housing offer.

Location & Surroundings

IGNOU’s headquarters is at Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068. This is the statutory and administrative base and houses central divisions, Schools of Studies, the library, Student Services Centre, Research Unit and Campus Placement Cell. Selected examinations, doctoral coursework, recruitment events and university ceremonies may also take place in New Delhi. For most open-and-distance learners, however, New Delhi is not their everyday study location. IGNOU operates through 67 regional centres and nearly 2,000 learner-support centres across India. A student’s assigned locations may handle counselling, practical sessions, assignment services or examinations, depending on the program. The university also maintains certain overseas study-centre activity. Location decisions should therefore be made at program level. Before enrolling, applicants should identify the responsible regional centre, check whether their program is activated at a convenient learner-support centre, and confirm where compulsory practicals, fieldwork or examinations occur. Admission to IGNOU should not be interpreted as automatic access to a residential New Delhi campus experience.

Costs & Career Outcomes

IGNOU does not have one university-wide tuition figure. Program fees in the January 2026 prospectus vary materially by subject and structure. Illustrative published totals included INR 12,900 for the three-year BA in Gender Studies, INR 20,000 for the two-year Master of Commerce, INR 30,900 for the three-year BBA and INR 49,800 for the three-year BCA. These are January 2026 prospectus figures, not promises for later cycles, and additional charges may apply. For that cycle, most common-prospectus programs also carried a non-refundable INR 300 registration fee and an INR 400 university development fee at admission. Examination, re-registration, practical, project and convocation charges can be separate. Students choosing digital rather than printed self-learning materials were eligible for a 15% concession on the program fee under the published policy. Government scholarships may be available through India’s National Scholarship Portal, while SC/ST fee support is reviewed for each admission cycle and must be checked against the latest notice. IGNOU’s flexibility can help students continue working while studying, but the university does not publish a general employment or salary outcome that should be assumed for every degree. Its Campus Placement Cell organizes recruitment drives for eligible learners and alumni. In 2026 these included roles across sectors such as IT, banking, customer support, hospitality, travel and aviation.
