The institution began in 1971 as Fachhochschule Bielefeld and adopted the name Hochschule Bielefeld – University of Applied Sciences and Arts in 2023. For winter 2026/27, HSBI’s general announcement gave 15 July as the master’s application deadline and 31 August for bachelor’s programmes without restricted admission. It explicitly warned that restricted-admission, work-integrated, part-time and other programmes can have different dates. Applicants should therefore treat the deadline on the individual programme page as controlling. Applicants with educational qualifications obtained outside Germany generally request preliminary review documentation, known as a VPD, from uni-assist before applying through HSBI’s CAT portal, unless they qualify for treatment equivalent to German applicants. HSBI states that C1 is required in most cases, with recognised evidence such as TestDaF, DSH-2 or telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule. Some open-admission programmes permit application with B2 plus registration for a C1 examination, subject to later submission. English and other language requirements must be checked course by course. Enrolment also requires payment of the semester contribution and valid health-insurance confirmation.

For winter 2026/27, HSBI advertised 42 bachelor’s and 26 master’s programmes. Its subject areas include architecture and construction, vocational education, design, computer science, engineering, technology, mathematics, nursing, health, social sciences and business. Three new or revised health-related bachelor’s options were among the changes announced for that intake. Applicants should use the current programme catalogue because availability, admission restrictions, start semester and location differ by course. HSBI offers more than the conventional full-time model. Its portfolio includes work-integrated, dual and part-time programmes, continuing-education master’s degrees and separate certificate offerings. In the work-integrated model described by the university, an eleven-week company phase is followed by a twelve-week university theory block. Company participation may take the form of vocational training, an internship or employment. Part-time courses combine self-study with attendance blocks scheduled on Saturdays during term. Applied learning is central across the institution. Students may complete subject projects, workplace placements and final theses with external organisations. Student Life & Environment

Student experience varies by location. Bielefeld is the main campus and shares the wider campus area with the separate Bielefeld University. Minden has a more compact campus arrangement, while HSBI’s Gütersloh facilities are based in central urban locations. The difference reflects location-specific components. Certain work-integrated programmes, certificate courses and other categories carry different charges, so students should verify the total for their exact course. Full payment must be recorded before enrolment or re-registration is completed. HSBI’s international factsheet gives an indicative living-cost range of approximately €800–€900 per month for accommodation, food, books and travel, but it does not label that estimate by academic year. It should be treated as an initial planning figure rather than a 2026 guarantee. Housing costs will also depend on city and whether a limited student-residence place is available. International students should budget separately for health insurance, visa-related financial requirements and the uni-assist service charge where applicable.
