The present institution was established in 1992, building on engineering education in Wismar dating to 1908 and maritime training traditions dating to 1846. It organizes teaching across engineering, business, and architecture and design, with most facilities on its compact Wismar campus and maritime subjects based in Rostock-Warnemünde. Its portfolio includes bachelor’s and master’s degrees delivered through on-campus, dual, part-time, and distance formats; several programs are taught in English, although German remains important for much of the wider catalog and daily life. The institution’s applied orientation is reflected in laboratories, design studios, industry connections, practical study elements, and a career platform offering internships and graduate opportunities.
About Hochschule Wismar
Hochschule Wismar is one of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s state universities of applied sciences. That status matters for applicants: it is a public higher-education institution established under state law, not a private training provider or a branch of another university. The current Hochschule Wismar was formed on 1 October 1992, although its historical roots include the Ingenieur-Akademie Wismar founded in 1908, a maritime-training lineage beginning in 1846, and an applied-art school founded in 1949. The institution describes its academic identity through three connected fields: technology, business, and design. Its formal structure comprises the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Business, and the Faculty of Architecture and Design. This combination supports study across areas such as computing, electrical and mechanical engineering, civil engineering, maritime subjects, management, business law, architecture, interior design, and product or communication design. Prospective students should treat the individual program page and governing study regulations as authoritative because award type, language, format, location, and entry requirements differ substantially. Most campus facilities and laboratories are in Wismar. The engineering faculty’s maritime studies, systems engineering, and logistics activities are based at Rostock-Warnemünde, creating a materially different study location and cost structure for affected students. Hochschule Wismar also offers dual, part-time, and distance-learning routes alongside conventional full-time campus study. Its official 2026 materials show active recruitment and a winter 2026/27 teaching start, confirming that the institution remains operational.

How Admissions Work
Admission is program-specific, and applicants should begin with the current course page before using the application portal. For winter semester 2026/27, the university’s international application guidance opened bachelor’s and master’s applications from 1 May through 15 July 2026, with introductory days and the semester start scheduled for 21 September 2026. These dates should not be reused for a later cycle without checking the updated official page. The university states that initial enrollment in full-time study is generally available for the winter semester; entry into a higher semester can be possible in either term. A recognized higher-education entrance qualification is normally required for bachelor’s study. German-taught programs require suitable German proficiency, while design, interior design, and communication design applicants must also complete the applicable aptitude process; for the 2026 cycle, the aptitude-test application deadline was 30 April. Master’s programs require a relevant prior degree and may impose subject, credit, grade, portfolio, or professional-experience conditions. For English-taught applications, the university’s general 2026/27 guidance accepted TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.0, or Duolingo 110, but individual program regulations can specify different thresholds and remain controlling. Architectural Lighting Design used a separate 1 March–30 April application window. Certain non-EU applicants to International Management or Operation and Management of Maritime Systems were required to apply through uni-assist. International applicants should allow additional time for qualification review and visa processing and confirm whether their route uses the university portal or uni-assist.
Academic Experience
Hochschule Wismar awards bachelor’s and master’s degrees across three faculties. The Faculty of Engineering includes civil engineering; electrical engineering and computer science; mechanical, process, energy, and environmental engineering; and maritime studies, systems engineering, and logistics. The latter area is primarily associated with Rostock-Warnemünde, while the other engineering departments are centered in Wismar. The Faculty of Business covers management, economics, business informatics, and law-related fields. The Faculty of Architecture and Design includes architecture, interior design, communication design and media, product and jewellery design, material-culture design, and lighting-related study. The current catalog contains full-time campus programs as well as dual, part-time, online, and distance options. Applicants therefore need to compare more than subject titles: delivery mode, campus, language, professional-experience requirements, and fees can vary. The catalog also includes German Diplom awards in selected design fields. Because Diplom does not map exactly to the database’s bachelor/master/phd categories, applicants should read the stated award on each program page rather than assume an equivalence. Teaching is application-oriented. Engineering materials emphasize laboratory work and practical placements, while architecture and design study uses studios, workshops, projects, and exhibitions. Some programs include formal practical-study phases or dual-study partners. English-taught options are available, including selected engineering, maritime, management, architecture, and lighting programs, but requirements are program-specific. The university’s English-program information shows that required prior degrees, ECTS totals, grades, experience, and English scores can differ even among master’s programs. Most of the broader portfolio remains German-taught, so language suitability should be checked course by course.

- Present Hochschule Wismar established on 1 October 1992
- Academic profile connects technology, business, and design
- Principal study locations are Wismar and Rostock-Warnemünde
Student Life & Environment
The Wismar campus concentrates nearly all laboratories and facilities serving Wismar-based programs within a relatively compact area. Campus maps identify teaching buildings, the university library, language and sports facilities, student administration, and faculty spaces. The university also advertises sports and dance courses, student representation through the AStA, and student-led social activity. Architecture and design students have exhibitions and studio-centered events, while institution-wide orientation activities help new students learn the campus and administrative systems. Housing is not automatically included with admission. The Studierendenwerk Rostock-Wismar operates furnished student residences in Wismar, generally with shared kitchens and bathrooms, and students must apply separately. Shared private apartments are another common option. Availability and arrangements should be confirmed directly rather than inferred from general campus guidance. Experience differs at Rostock-Warnemünde. Maritime students have a coastal campus near port activity, access to Rostock’s urban and cultural life, and eligibility for local university-sport opportunities. A student residence exists in Warnemünde, but places are described as sought after, so early applications are advisable. Warnemünde students also have a semester-based transport arrangement that does not apply at the Wismar location. International students can use the International Office for application and arrival guidance, but learning German remains valuable even when the degree itself is taught in English.
Location & Surroundings
Wismar is a Baltic Sea port city in northwestern Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Its historic center forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage property, giving students a setting characterized by Hanseatic brick architecture, churches, the harbor, and a compact urban core. The principal campus is close enough to the city’s services for short everyday journeys, and the university describes most Wismar laboratories and facilities as concentrated there. Recreation includes cinemas, cafés, student venues, and water-based activities around Wismar Bay, but applicants seeking a large metropolitan environment should recognize that Wismar is a smaller city. The university’s second principal teaching location is Rostock-Warnemünde, serving maritime studies, systems engineering, and logistics. Warnemünde sits at the Baltic coast and is connected by S-Bahn with central Rostock and its main station. This gives maritime students access to a larger university city while keeping teaching close to the port and marine environment. Campus assignment should be checked before arranging housing or transport. Winter 2026/27 semester contributions are substantially different at the two locations because Warnemünde’s contribution includes transport and culture-ticket components that are absent in Wismar.
Costs & Career Outcomes
Hochschule Wismar states that it does not charge tuition for its regular on-campus degree courses. This should not be generalized to every offering: distance, online, part-time, or continuing-education programs may charge separate program fees, so applicants must consult the relevant course page. Students also need to budget for accommodation, food, health insurance, study materials, communications, and other living expenses. For first enrollment in winter semester 2026/27, the official contribution was €147.50 at Wismar and €379.30 at Warnemünde. The corresponding re-registration totals were €123.00 and €354.80. Warnemünde’s higher total included a €226.80 Deutschlandticket and a €5 culture ticket; those components did not apply at Wismar. Contributions are time-sensitive and must be checked again for later semesters. Housing is a separate expense, and residence capacity is not guaranteed. The applied academic model is designed to connect study with professional practice through laboratories, projects, practical phases, dual-study arrangements, and external partners. Hochschule Wismar’s restricted career portal is available to its students and alumni. It lists internships, working-student employment, thesis topics, trainee and entry-level roles, dual-study practice partners, career guidance, and networking opportunities; university staff review offers before publication. These services can support a job search, but the university does not publish a universal placement rate or salary outcome on the cited pages, so applicants should assess employment prospects by program, language ability, sector, and intended labor market.
