Student Life & Environment

Student life is shaped by a compact specialist community and the practical demands of studio-based education. Students participate in elected representation through the student parliament and AStA, while the annual Rundgang gives the public access to current student work. Workshops and project spaces are integral to study, so day-to-day campus activity is closely tied to making, critique, exhibitions and collaborative production. The specialist library supports both practice and theory. It holds more than 55,000 media units, with strengths in art and art history, architecture, visual communication, product design and theatre, supplemented by philosophy, sociology, media theory and cultural history. It provides individual and group workspaces, research assistance, scanning and copying facilities, and digital resources. HfG students can use sports opportunities offered through arrangements including Goethe University, with activities such as team sports, martial arts, climbing and dance available for modest participation charges. Support includes confidential, free psychosocial counselling through Studierendenwerk Frankfurt, social and financial guidance, childcare and family-related information, and dedicated contacts for discrimination, disability, conflict and personal safety. The International Office advises exchange students and coordinates a buddy program and welcome activities. Housing is not presented as a guaranteed campus benefit; students should investigate residence and private-market options early, particularly if moving into the Frankfurt–Offenbach area.

Location & Surroundings

The principal HfG site is at Schlossstraße 31 in central Offenbach am Main, close to the Main river. It includes the main building, West Wing and the historic Isenburger Schloss, which the university has used since the early 2000s. Other teaching, gallery, research and workshop locations are distributed across Offenbach, with the Höchst porcelain facility located in Frankfurt. Offenbach forms part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main urban region, giving students access to the cultural, professional and transport infrastructure of both Offenbach and Frankfurt. The university’s directions identify Offenbach Marktplatz as the nearest S-Bahn stop, approximately a two-minute walk toward the river. Lines S1, S2, S8 and S9 provide connections from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, while S8 and S9 also connect from Frankfurt Airport’s regional station. This is an urban, multi-building study environment rather than a self-contained residential campus. Its central position can be useful for exhibitions, cultural partnerships, internships and professional networking, but prospective students should assess commuting and housing arrangements separately from academic admission.

Costs & Career Outcomes

The university publishes a semester contribution rather than a general tuition figure. For winter semester 2026/27, the total is €396.48. It consists of €226.80 for the Deutschlandticket, €106.50 for Studierendenwerk, €50 in administrative costs, €10.20 for the student body and €2.98 for Call a Bike. These amounts apply specifically to that semester and may change in later terms. HfG’s page does not establish a single comprehensive cost of attendance, so students must budget separately for housing, food, materials, insurance and personal expenses. Current students were required to pay the winter 2026/27 contribution by 31 July 2026. A late re-registration period ran from 1 to 31 August 2026 with a €30 charge. Those dates concern continuing-student re-registration, not new-applicant admission. Eligible Art and Design students could apply for the 2026 Deutschlandstipendium, worth €300 per month for one year, but future availability and deadlines require a fresh check. Career preparation is embedded in practice. Design students complete project work and a compulsory BA internship that may be undertaken in a design office, industrial design department or research institute. The curriculum develops practical, technical, theoretical and collaborative capabilities for changing creative fields.
