Student Life & Environment

Student life is concentrated at Campus Derendorf, where teaching, services and common facilities share one urban site. The campus includes green and outdoor sitting areas as well as restored industrial buildings. The former cattle hall houses the library and Campus IT, while another building contains the student canteen, a cafeteria and the Studierenden Support Center. The center brings together services including academic advising, the International Office, family support and assistance for students with disabilities. The AStA student representation also has offices on campus. The surrounding Derendorf district offers cafés, bistros and other everyday amenities beyond the campus. The compulsory semester contribution supports student services and includes the Deutschland semester public-transport ticket, university sports, and access to subsidized canteen meals. These inclusions can reduce some daily transport and campus-living expenses, but they should not be interpreted as free housing or full living-cost coverage. Accommodation is not automatically supplied with admission. HSD advises degree-seeking students to arrange their own room or apartment. Studierendenwerk Düsseldorf operates halls with single rooms, apartments, shared flats and some accessible accommodation, but capacity is limited and applicants are commonly placed on a waiting list. Shared private flats are another common option. Students relocating to Düsseldorf should therefore begin their search early rather than planning around an assured residence-hall place.

Location & Surroundings

HSD is located at Münsterstraße 156 in Düsseldorf’s Derendorf district. The consolidated campus occupies the former slaughterhouse and Schlösser brewery site north of the central city area. Its design combines converted historic structures with newer academic buildings, giving students access to teaching spaces, services and social areas without routine travel between separate faculty campuses. The campus is well connected to Düsseldorf and the wider Rhine-Ruhr region. Düsseldorf-Derendorf station is served by S-Bahn lines connecting toward destinations including Düsseldorf Airport, Cologne, Essen, Dortmund and Solingen. Tram stops around the university are served by lines 701 and 704, with additional local bus access. Bicycle parking and a repair station are also available on campus. Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and provides a large professional setting for study in business, design, media, engineering, culture and social services. That setting can be valuable for internships and part-time work, although opportunities depend on language ability, program demands and individual eligibility. Housing availability is an important practical counterweight: students should budget and search early because neither enrollment nor proximity to campus guarantees a room.

Costs & Career Outcomes

HSD distinguishes the compulsory semester contribution from tuition fees. For winter term 2026, the official contribution was €374.81 per student. It covered the Germany-wide semester public-transport ticket, university sports and subsidized student-canteen meals, among other collective services. This is a dated 2026 amount and may change in later semesters. Program-specific charges, living costs, materials, visa expenses and health insurance remain separate and should be checked individually. Housing is likely to be one of the largest personal expenses. HSD does not guarantee accommodation to degree-seeking students. Studierendenwerk residences are generally cheaper than private-market housing, but places are limited and waiting lists are common. Applicants should plan for deposits and independent housing searches and should not treat exchange-student room arrangements as available to all degree students. Career preparation reflects the institution’s applied focus. The Career Service supports students from the first through the final semester and also assists graduates moving into employment. Services include feedback and guidance for applications, internships, part-time jobs and entry-level employment. HSD works with the Stellenwerk job platform, through which employers can advertise opportunities to students.
