About GDUT

Guangdong University of Technology (GDUT) is a provincial key university in Guangzhou. Its undergraduate teaching began in 1958, and in 1995 it took its present form through a merger of the Guangdong Institute of Technology, the Guangdong Institute of Machinery and the eastern campus of the South China Institute of Construction. The university describes itself as engineering-led, with sciences, economics, management, humanities, law, arts and education alongside.

It is large: its March 2026 statistics page lists 55,746 students, including 39,916 undergraduates, 13,975 master's students, 1,188 doctoral students and 667 international students. It offers 94 undergraduate programmes in 26 colleges, and the university reports that 11 subjects, including engineering, materials science and computer science, rank in the top 1 percent worldwide in ESI. It runs on several campuses in Guangzhou and a further campus in Jieyang.

International students can study in Chinese across the university, and three undergraduate programmes (e-commerce, computer science and technology, and international economics and trade) are taught entirely in English. It suits students who want a practical, industry-connected engineering or business education in the Pearl River Delta, and who either have solid Chinese or are happy to study in one of the English-taught degrees.

How to apply

Apply online at iec.gdut.edu.cn or at apply.gdut.edu.cn: register, fill in the international student application form, upload your documents (passport, high-school certificate and transcript, medical report) and pay the application fee. The university reviews documents, then interviews shortlisted applicants, issues an admission notice and visa application form, and you apply for an X1 or X2 student visa.

What admissions looks for

  • A complete, truthful document set: the brochure states that incomplete or false applications are treated as unqualified.
  • Proof of language ability for your chosen teaching language, HSK 4 or 5 or TOEFL 80 / IELTS 5.5.
  • Good performance in the interview stage for applicants who pass document review.

Tips for applying to GDUT

  1. 1 Decide early between the three English-taught degrees and the Chinese-taught catalogue, because the language requirements and tuition differ.
  2. 2 Check the nationality and residence rules before applying if you or a parent have Chinese nationality or heritage; the brochure asks for exit and entry stamps covering the last four years.
  3. 3 Do not renew your passport before you register on campus, as the brochure warns this can invalidate electronic documents.
  4. 4 Apply for the Guangdong government scholarship for new international undergraduates after admission; it pays 10,000 CNY.
