Student Life & Environment

FIT offers a compact, professionally oriented student experience in Manhattan. Location & Surroundings

FIT’s main campus occupies a city block on West 27th Street in Chelsea, Manhattan, with an additional residence hall on West 31st Street. The location is close to the Garment District, Hudson Yards, the High Line, and major Midtown destinations. Nearby subway, bus, and rail connections make museums, galleries, theatres, parks, employers, and other New York neighborhoods accessible without a car. For students in fashion, media, design, retail, communications, and cultural fields, the setting can support internships, professional events, field research, and exposure to exhibitions and businesses. The tradeoff is that FIT feels like an urban college embedded in the city, not an enclosed traditional campus. Daily life may involve crowded transit, limited outdoor campus space, and New York living costs. On-campus housing can simplify the transition, but applicants should compare residence charges with off-campus arrangements and consider commuting time, lease terms, and personal comfort with dense city living.

Costs & Career Outcomes

For 2026–27, FIT lists full-time tuition per semester at $2,895 for associate-level New York residents and $8,685 for associate-level nonresidents. At the bachelor’s level, the corresponding rates are $3,585 and $10,846. International students in F-1 status are not eligible for the New York resident rate. Tuition is only part of the budget: technology, student activity, health-services, course, materials, and other charges may apply. The newest housing figures on the 2026–27 tuition page are explicitly identified as typical spring 2026 charges and remain subject to board ratification. Listed meal plans range from $1,700 to $2,819 per semester, and housing applications require a $500 nonrefundable deposit.
