Student Life & Environment

Student life is closely tied to FAMU’s HBCU traditions and the university’s broader “Rattler” identity. The university reports more than 300 registered student organizations. Location & Surroundings

FAMU’s main campus occupies “The Hill” in Tallahassee, Florida’s capital. Its position near the city’s downtown and government district may be useful for students interested in public affairs, law, education, nonprofit work, or state government, although access to any internship depends on the employer and student qualifications. Florida State University is also in Tallahassee, and the two institutions share the FAMU–FSU College of Engineering. The university provides official campus maps, driving directions, parking information, tours, and a virtual preview. Tallahassee International Airport is the nearest commercial airport identified in FAMU’s directions. Students without cars should investigate current campus shuttles and municipal transit routes for the addresses they expect to use; service patterns can change and should not be assumed from older planning documents. Not every FAMU student studies in Tallahassee. The College of Law is in Orlando, while pharmacy and public-health-related activity extends to several other Florida cities. Location decisions should therefore be made program by program.
