Portales provides the everyday services of a regional community, while the nearby Clovis area and Cannon Air Force Base broaden the surrounding population and employment context. The campus itself occupies more than 400 acres. Academic and residential buildings sit alongside athletic venues, arts facilities, and several distinctive cultural resources, including the Blackwater Draw Museum, Gennaro Natural History Museum, Miles Mineral Museum, Roosevelt County Museum, and Runnels Gallery.
