Sign up to see your chancesAsian Institute of Technology is a not-for-profit, English-medium postgraduate institution based in Pathum Thani, north of central Bangkok. Founded in 1959, it awards master’s and doctoral degrees and concentrates on technology, engineering, environmental systems, agriculture, sustainability, development, public policy, and management. Its residential campus and internationally oriented community distinguish it from a conventional city university. Prospective students should understand that AIT is principally a graduate institution: it does not independently award a standard bachelor’s degree, even though some partnership pathways combine study at a bachelor-awarding university with a later AIT master’s award. Programs are designed for students seeking specialized study, applied research, or professional development with an Asian and international perspective. Costs vary substantially between the School of Management and other faculties, so applicants should budget by program rather than rely on one institution-wide figure.
About Asian Institute of Technology
AIT began in 1959 as the SEATO Graduate School of Engineering and adopted the Asian Institute of Technology name in 1967. Its governing charter gives the institution juridical personality and authority to award certificates, diplomas, and degrees. Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation lists AIT among the country’s international higher-education institutions. Official evidence also confirms that AIT remained operational in 2026, enrolling new and continuing master’s and doctoral students. The institution describes itself as not-for-profit, international, English-speaking, and postgraduate. That combination matters for applicants: AIT is not a comprehensive undergraduate university, and its student experience is structured around advanced professional and research education. Its academic portfolio spans engineering and technology, civil and environmental systems, climate and sustainability, food and agriculture, development and public policy, and management. AIT’s main campus is residential and located in Klong Luang, Pathum Thani, north of Bangkok. Teaching, research facilities, accommodation, dining, student services, and recreation are concentrated on the same site. The international orientation is visible in the English-medium curriculum, cross-border degree partnerships, and multicultural campus activities. Applicants seeking a central-Bangkok urban campus should compare the actual location and transport needs carefully; applicants who prefer a contained graduate community may find the setting more suitable.

How Admissions Work
Admission is program-specific and primarily intended for applicants who already hold a relevant university degree. Master’s applicants generally need a recognized bachelor’s qualification, while doctoral applicants normally need both strong undergraduate records and a relevant master’s degree. The doctoral process also requires at least two recommendations according to AIT’s current admissions FAQ; master’s applications do not generally require recommendation letters. Applicants may apply to only one program at a time, and the published application-processing charge is USD 25 or THB 800. All AIT programs are taught in English. Applicants may demonstrate proficiency through an accepted test, qualifying citizenship and education in an English-speaking country, or an acceptable university certificate confirming English as the sole medium of instruction. The current FAQ identifies an AIT English score of 6 or IELTS Academic writing band 6 for unconditional admission and notes that some applicants with lower scores may receive conditional admission with required English study. Applicants should use the detailed equivalency table for other tests rather than infer a TOEFL conversion. AIT normally has January and August semester intakes, with additional March, June, and October terms limited to the School of Management. The admissions page lists separate deadlines for scholarship applicants, overseas applicants needing an education visa, and other applicants. Because these dates can change by cycle, candidates for 2027 should confirm the live admissions calendar rather than reuse the August 2026 deadlines. Applications are submitted online, and admitted students must later provide required original academic and medical documents.
Academic Experience
AIT awards graduate qualifications rather than a conventional range of undergraduate degrees. Its official overview identifies MBA, MEng, and MSc master’s awards, executive master’s programs, and doctoral awards including PhD, DEng, DTechSc, and DBA. Certificate, special, bridging, and continuing-education options also exist, but these should not be confused with full degrees. The 2026 academic portfolio is organized across faculties covering advanced science and technology; civil and environmental engineering; climate change and sustainability; food, agriculture and natural resources; public policy and sustainable development; and management. Examples on the current program list include computer science and software engineering, data science and artificial intelligence, construction and infrastructure management, water engineering, climate change and sustainable development, disaster management, agribusiness, natural-resources management, development planning, public policy, MBA study, and doctoral management programs. Several international dual-degree master’s options are listed, including collaborations involving institutions in France, the United Kingdom, Taiwan, and the United States. Students should check the individual program page for the participating institution, curriculum, mobility requirements, and award structure rather than assume identical terms across partnerships. Research and applied learning are central to the graduate model. Depending on the program, students may complete a thesis, research study, project, or internship. AIT encourages internships, but the Career Center notes that their place in the curriculum varies: some programs require them, while others treat them as optional professional experience. Academic-adviser approval is important when a student expects an internship to carry credit.

Student Life & Environment
AIT provides a residential graduate-campus experience rather than the dispersed life of a downtown university. On-campus housing includes multiple room categories with differing layouts and amenities, while the published budgeting guide places dormitory accommodation, usually including bills, at approximately THB 2,500–7,000 per month. Applicants should confirm the current room category, availability, deposit, utilities, and family-housing conditions directly before committing. Daily services on campus include a library with an outdoor study garden, food and retail outlets, grocery options, cafés, laundry and photocopy services, and dedicated prayer rooms. The compact arrangement allows students to reach teaching buildings, research spaces, housing, and support services without a regular trip into Bangkok. This may be especially useful for intensive graduate work, although students wanting frequent city access should include transport time and cost in their planning. The Student Union organizes welcome activities, trips, cultural shows, food fairs, and social events. These activities fit AIT’s international student body and provide opportunities for students to encounter cultures beyond their own academic program. Campus maps also identify sports areas, a medical clinic, the Student Union office, dormitories, and conference facilities. As with any residential postgraduate campus, the atmosphere is likely to center more on mature students, research, and professional networking than on a traditional undergraduate social calendar.
Location & Surroundings
AIT’s official address is in Klong Luang, Pathum Thani 12120, at kilometre 42 on Phaholyothin Highway. The campus is north of Bangkok rather than in the central city. The database’s Bangkok label is therefore best understood as a metropolitan-area reference, not the precise municipality. This setting gives students access to the wider Bangkok region while preserving a self-contained campus environment. It also changes the practical calculation for commuting, internships, nightlife, and appointments in central Bangkok: travel should be planned rather than assumed to be a short urban trip. AIT’s August 2026 arrival guidance recognized both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports and provided scheduled airport pickup for new international students during designated arrival dates, but that intake-specific service should not be assumed for later arrivals. The campus itself includes housing, dining, retail, study facilities, recreation, health provision, and student services. Students can therefore manage many everyday needs locally. Those expecting to live off campus should compare transport access and bills as well as rent; AIT’s published guide estimates private accommodation separately from campus dormitory costs.
Costs & Career Outcomes
For the August 2026 semester, AIT published program-level costs in Thai baht. Outside the School of Management, the listed total institutional fees were THB 855,600 for a 48-credit master’s or MPhil over four semesters and THB 1,495,800 for an 84-credit doctorate over seven semesters. A one-year, 30-credit master’s was listed at THB 524,800. These totals include stated tuition, registration, language-support, medical-insurance, and Student Union charges but exclude living costs and, where applicable, visa expenses. School of Management pricing is separate: the page listed THB 632,700 for a one-year MBA or MSc, THB 856,600 for a two-year MBA or MSc, THB 1,501,500 for its PhD, and THB 1,516,100 for the DBA. AIT estimated general living, accommodation, and miscellaneous expenses at THB 11,500–15,000 per month. Dormitory accommodation was estimated at THB 2,500–7,000 monthly, usually including bills. These are official August 2026 figures, not guaranteed 2027 prices. AIT scholarships may cover all or part of tuition, but recipients remain responsible for uncovered tuition, registration fees, and living expenses. Awards are competitive and should not be treated as automatic. The Career Center supports students and alumni with counseling, internship and job opportunities, CV and cover-letter preparation, mock interviews, and career events. AIT held a Career Fair and Student Research Exhibition in March 2026 with organizations from engineering, manufacturing, energy, consulting, information technology, and sustainability. This demonstrates active employer engagement but is not an employment or salary guarantee.
