About AMU
Adam Mickiewicz University (AMU, in Polish UAM) was founded in Poznań in 1919 as Piast University, took the name of the Romantic poet Adam Mickiewicz in 1955, and traces its roots to a Jesuit college chartered in 1611. It is one of ten Polish universities with official 'research university' status, and teaches more than 29,000 bachelor's and master's students across 202 programmes and specialisations, plus about 1,200 doctoral candidates.
AMU has 21 faculties in Poznań, from English, Law and Administration, and Political Science and Journalism to Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy, and Mathematics and Computer Science, plus branch campuses in Słubice (Collegium Polonicum, on the German border), Gniezno, Piła and Kalisz. It is a member of the EPICUR European university alliance alongside Strasbourg, Amsterdam and Freiburg.
Most degrees are taught in Polish, but AMU runs nine English-taught bachelor's programmes, including International Relations, European Legal Studies, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Chemistry, with fees of PLN 1,000 to 4,000 per semester. Admission is mainly by school-leaving results through the Online Admission System (a few programmes, such as Liberal Arts and Sciences, add a competency-based interview), so it suits applicants with solid grades who want an affordable, established university in a large student city.
Why students choose AMU
English-taught bachelor's degrees cost PLN 2,000 to 8,000 a year (PLN 1,000 to 4,000 per semester) for 2026-27 entrants.
Polish-taught full-time study is free for Polish, EU/EEA, Swiss and UK citizens and for holders of the Karta Polaka.
It holds Poland's research university status and belongs to the EPICUR European university alliance.
Admission is fully online, with no paper documents, and you can apply to as many programmes as you like for PLN 85 each.

Selectivity
AMU publishes no overall admission rate. Each programme has a fixed number of places and ranks applicants on school-leaving results; for example, English-taught International Relations admitted up to 75 students and European Legal Studies up to 60 in 2026, while English Linguistics took up to 30 in its main round.
Typical entry requirements
| Polish Matura | Programme-specific weighted scores (max. 100 points); e.g. International Relations weights Polish, a modern foreign language and civics or history. Olympiad laureates and finalists can get maximum points |
|---|---|
| IB, EB or foreign school-leaving certificate | Results converted by AMU's Student Affairs Section; certificates from outside the EU/EFTA/OECD need an apostille or legalisation, NAWA information or recognition, and a pass in the programme's entrance exam |
| English language | English-taught programmes require English at B2. Since 1 August 2025, non-EU applicants must prove this with one of the documents listed in the Polish ministerial ordinance of 30 July 2025 (e.g. a qualifying language certificate or a degree taught in English). Polish-taught programmes require Polish at B2; EU citizens without a recognised certificate take AMU's online Polish test (100 of 150 points to pass). |
