About Uni.lu
The University of Luxembourg was created in 2003 by merging four existing higher-education institutes and is the country's only public university. Its main campus at Belval in Esch-sur-Alzette opened in 2015 on former steelworks land, keeping the old blast furnaces between new teaching buildings; it also teaches at Kirchberg and Limpertsberg in Luxembourg City. It has more than 7,200 students, 57% of them international, from 148 countries.
Teaching is organised in three faculties: Science, Technology and Medicine; Law, Economics and Finance; and Humanities, Education and Social Sciences. Five interdisciplinary centres, including the SnT centre for security, reliability and trust and the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine, carry much of the research, which produced 2,679 publications in 2025 and has won 27 ERC grants.
Multilingualism is the defining feature: the university teaches in four languages and 55 of its degree programmes are bilingual or multilingual, so applicants must prove the required CEFR level in every teaching language of their programme. There is one intake a year, in September, and bachelor's students spend a semester abroad. It suits linguistically confident students who want a small, international university in a small, expensive country at the crossroads of France, Germany and Belgium.

Selectivity
No admission rate is published. Each programme's selection committee assesses complete, eligible applications; some programmes cap numbers (the Bachelor in Law takes a maximum of 180 students per cohort). Outcomes are admission, conditional admission, waiting list or rejection.

The 2027–28 application period opens on 1 February 2027, and the university says its admission criteria for 2027–28 are under review. The dates above are from the 2026–27 cycle: non-EU applicants had to apply by 24 March 2026, several weeks before EU applicants. There is only one intake per year, in September.
How to apply
Apply online through the university's admission portal, choosing up to three programmes (applications cannot be changed once created). Upload your ID, school diploma and transcripts for the last three years, the Luxembourg diploma equivalence, language certificates for each teaching language and any programme-specific documents such as a CV, motivation letter or essay. Pay the non-refundable EUR 100 application fee per application, then click Send your file before the deadline.
What admissions looks for
- A recognised secondary school diploma, with the Luxembourg equivalence document in hand for non-EU applicants before the deadline.
- Proven language skills at the required CEFR level in every teaching language of the programme.
- Strong academic results over the last three years of secondary school.
- Motivation and fit with the programme, shown in cover letters and essays (for Law, a French cover letter and an English legal essay).
Tips for applying to Uni.lu
- 1 Request your diploma equivalence from the Ministry of Education months in advance: non-EU applicants without it by the deadline are not eligible that year.
- 2 Non-EU applicants face a March deadline; start preparing language certificates and documents in the autumn before.
- 3 If you are a non-EU applicant, request a criminal record extract from your home country by early April, as it is needed for the immigration procedure after admission.
- 4 Check every teaching language listed on your programme page: a multilingual programme means you need certificates for all of them unless the page says otherwise.
- 5 You can apply to up to three programmes, but an application cannot be edited once created, so check each carefully.

Luxembourg's fees are low, but living costs are high. Programme-specific scholarships exist, such as the Portabella, A&O Shearman and Linklaters Making Links scholarships for the Bachelor in Law. The EUR 100 application fee is deducted from the first semester's fees for admitted students who enrol.

Most students are based at Belval, a new district in Esch-sur-Alzette built around the preserved blast furnaces of a former steelworks, with a train station, library and restaurants on site; other programmes use the Kirchberg and Limpertsberg campuses in Luxembourg City.
