Sign up to see your chancesUniversité Laval is a public, French-language university in Québec City, Canada. Established in 1852 by the Séminaire de Québec under a royal charter, it traces its educational roots to 1663. The university now organizes teaching and research across 17 faculties and more than 60 departments, schools and institutes. Its approximately 600 programs span bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral study in fields including agriculture, business, engineering, health, humanities, law, science and social science. Most courses are taught in French, so applicants should not rely on the database record’s English-language designation. Students study on a large urban campus in the Sainte-Foy area, with university residences, extensive student organizations and public transit access. Experiential learning is prominent: the university reports that more than 90% of its undergraduate programs include internships, often paid.
About Université Laval
Université Laval is an independent, public, degree-granting university in Québec City. The Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials describes it as a public university recognized under a public act. Its official history dates the university’s creation to 1852, when a royal charter gave the Séminaire de Québec the power to confer degrees. Although the institution traces its roots to the Séminaire’s foundation in 1663, 1852 is the appropriate university founding year. The university has a broad academic and research structure: 17 faculties, more than 60 departments, schools and institutes, and approximately 600 programs. Its faculties cover professional fields such as business, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, engineering and education alongside arts, humanities, sciences and social sciences. The university also reports more than 300 research centres, chairs, institutes and other groups, supported by over CAD 470 million in research and innovation funding in its current institutional overview. Université Laval is fundamentally a French-language institution. This matters for students comparing it with anglophone Canadian universities: most courses are offered in French, and non-francophone applicants may need to demonstrate adequate French proficiency. Some programs or learning opportunities use other languages, but applicants should check the language and delivery details for the exact program rather than assuming English instruction. The institution was actively listing admissions for 2026 entry when reviewed in August 2026. Its continuing program catalogue and current tuition, deadline and residence information also support an operating status.

How Admissions Work
Admission is program- and applicant-specific. Applicants should first select a program and consult its official description because program requirements and deadlines take precedence over general university guidance. Requirements can differ by level, previous education, country, capacity limits and professional prerequisites. Supporting documents are submitted digitally through the online application process; missing documents must be provided by the deadline shown in the applicant’s online file. For international applicants, the general published deadlines are February 1 for many fall-entry undergraduate and graduate programs, July 1 for many winter-entry programs, and December 1 for many summer-entry programs. Some thesis master’s and doctoral programs accept fall applications later, while limited-enrolment programs and customized research degrees can use different dates. Applicants should treat these as general reference points, not universal deadlines. The university advises international applicants that immigration procedures may take four to six months. Most courses are in French. Applicants whose elementary and secondary education was completed in another language may be required to take the Test de connaissance du français after applying. Recent DELF, TFI or TEF results that include written expression may also be accepted in some circumstances. Test outcomes can lead to required French immersion or qualifying coursework, and applicants below the necessary level may have to improve their French before beginning those courses. For Winter 2026 entry and later, accepting an offer requires a non-refundable tuition deposit: CAD 300 for Québec and other Canadian students or CAD 1,000 for international students, subject to the university’s stated refund exception for certain immigration refusals.
Academic Experience
Université Laval offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs, along with certificates, specialized graduate diplomas, microprograms and certain professional undergraduate doctorates. Its searchable catalogue separates first-cycle bachelor’s programs, second-cycle professional and research master’s programs, and third-cycle doctorates. Prospective students should distinguish these award types carefully: a certificate or microprogram is not interchangeable with a bachelor’s or graduate degree. The academic range extends across agriculture and food sciences; arts and humanities; business; dentistry; education; forestry, geography and geomatics; law; medicine; music; nursing; pharmacy; philosophy; planning, architecture, art and design; science and engineering; social sciences; theology and religious studies; and international studies. This structure makes it possible to combine a large comprehensive-university setting with specialized professional and research environments. Learning formats are mixed. The university’s institutional overview reports that 56% of courses are in person, 34% online and 10% hybrid or HyFlex. Those institution-wide proportions do not guarantee that a particular degree can be completed remotely; applicants should verify delivery mode, campus requirements and course availability in the individual program description. Applied experience is a notable feature. Université Laval says more than 90% of undergraduate programs include internships, often paid. The exact internship structure, eligibility, compensation and whether participation is compulsory vary by program. Research-oriented students can also assess potential fit through the university’s extensive network of research groups and affiliated institutions. Because most teaching is in French, language readiness is an academic planning issue as well as an admissions requirement.

Student Life & Environment
Student life combines a large association network with services for health, academic success, accessibility and adjustment to university. Université Laval lists more than 230 student and extracurricular associations, including academic, cultural, athletic, entrepreneurial, political, social, religious and community-interest groups. Students can therefore look for both program-based representation and activities outside their field of study. The student support directory covers psychosocial assistance, mental health, personal budgeting, scholarships and financial aid, orientation, learning support and accommodation measures. International students also have dedicated integration and arrival resources. These services are available through several university units, so students who need continuing support should confirm eligibility, appointment procedures and whether service is available in their preferred language. On-campus housing consists of four residence buildings, including one designated for women. For the period from May 1, 2026, through April 30, 2027, the published full-time-student room rate is CAD 443 per month. Rooms include basic furniture, while bedding is not included in the standard rate. Availability is not guaranteed, and students arriving from outside Québec should investigate residence application timing and off-campus alternatives early. Campus recreation and wellness resources include the PEPS sports complex and health-related services. The overall environment is primarily francophone, which can offer substantial French immersion but may require preparation from students accustomed to studying and socializing mainly in English.
Location & Surroundings
Université Laval’s principal address is 2325 rue de l’Université in Québec City. The campus is in the Sainte-Foy area rather than within the historic walled centre, although students have access to the wider cultural, governmental and employment environment of Québec City. The university describes the city’s historic district as a UNESCO World Heritage setting. Full-time students in regular programs and exchange students are eligible for the university public transit pass during the autumn and winter semesters. It provides unlimited travel on participating Québec City and Lévis bus systems. The campus also has pedestrian paths and underground walkways that help movement between buildings during winter, alongside cycling infrastructure and nearby bus connections. For longer-distance arrivals, the Sainte-Foy bus terminal is close to campus and is connected by local transit. Québec City Jean-Lesage International Airport can also be reached by taxi or a combination of local bus routes. Students should expect a four-season climate with cold, snowy winters and budget for appropriate clothing if arriving from a warmer region. French is central to everyday life in the city and on campus, although visitors will encounter some English in tourism and other settings.
Costs & Career Outcomes
Costs depend heavily on residency status, study level, program type and course load. The university’s 2026–2027 planning estimate for an international undergraduate taking 30 credits lists tuition of CAD 28,232.96. With mandatory health insurance, housing, groceries, transit and other study and personal expenses, its estimated annual total is CAD 46,863 to CAD 51,103. It also identifies up to CAD 3,275 in possible first-year one-time expenses. These figures are planning estimates, not a guaranteed student bill. For international master’s students taking 24 credits, the same official page estimates annual tuition of CAD 18,127.52 for a research-based master’s and CAD 22,724.24 for a course-based master’s. Corresponding total annual estimates are CAD 36,757 to CAD 40,997 and CAD 41,354 to CAD 45,594. Québec residents, Canadian students from outside Québec, French students and some francophone Belgian or international students follow different fee rules. Exemptions and scholarships may reduce supplemental international charges for eligible students. Housing estimates on the budgeting page range from CAD 5,400 to CAD 9,640 annually for a university residence room or shared off-campus accommodation. Separately, the residence service lists a CAD 443 monthly room rate for full-time students from May 2026 through April 2027. Students should calculate costs using their exact profile and registration load. Career preparation is built into many curricula: the university reports internships in more than 90% of undergraduate programs, often paid. Availability and conditions vary, so applicants should inspect the relevant degree plan rather than assume a placement is guaranteed. No reliable institution-wide graduate salary or employment-rate figure was identified, so career decisions should also consider program-specific licensing, internship and labour-market information.
