About UNITEN
Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) is a private university wholly owned by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Malaysia's national electricity utility. It began in 1976 as TNB's corporate training centre, became an institute of higher learning in 1994 and was upgraded to a university in 1997.
The university describes itself as the Energy University: its engineering, computing and business programmes are built around the power sector, from electrical power engineering and renewable energy to energy economics and software for energy management. Teaching is organised in the College of Engineering, the College of Computing and Informatics, UNITEN Business School, the College of Graduate Studies and the College of Continuing Education, and research runs through institutes including the Institute of Power Engineering, the Institute of Sustainable Energy and the Institute of Nuclear Energy.
UNITEN has two campuses. The main Putrajaya Campus near Kajang in Selangor hosts engineering and computing, while the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Campus in Muadzam Shah, Pahang, focuses on accounting, finance and business. There are three intakes a year, and international students can start with a one-year foundation or an Intensive English Programme. It suits students who want an applied, industry-linked engineering or computing degree with a clear route into the energy sector.

UNITEN admits students in January, June and September. Dates for 2027 intakes were not yet published; the 2026 dates above are for reference only. Applications arriving less than six weeks before an intake are treated as late and may be deferred because the student visa cannot be issued in time. All dates and requirements here come from archived copies (March-April 2026) of UNITEN's official pages, because uniten.edu.my was offline on 29 September 2026.
How to apply
Apply through the UNITEN online application system (UniApps), uploading your passport, certified school certificates and transcripts (translated into English if needed) and English test results. An offer letter follows, usually within three working days of complete documents and the initial payment. International students then obtain a Visa Approval Letter through EMGS, which typically takes 6-8 weeks.
What admissions looks for
- Minimum grades in the programme's key subjects: Mathematics and Physics for engineering, and Mathematics plus a science or ICT subject for computing.
- For those entering from a foundation, matriculation or diploma, a CGPA of at least 2.00 (higher for computing diplomas and for accounting).
- English proficiency, either through a recognised test or UNITEN's Intensive English Programme.
- Complete, certified documents so an offer and visa approval can be processed in time.
Tips for applying to UNITEN
- 1 International applicants should apply at least six weeks before the intake; later applications risk being deferred because the EMGS visa takes 6-8 weeks.
- 2 If your English is not yet at the required level, budget for the Intensive English Programme (RM5,600) before your degree.
- 3 Check which campus runs your programme: engineering and computing are in Putrajaya, while most accounting and business degrees are at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Campus in Pahang.
- 4 Malaysian students can check the Education Incentive Discounts (family, alumni and income-based) and PTPTN loan levels before choosing a programme.

UNITEN lists sponsored and external scholarships, including the Malaysia International Scholarship, the YCU Aspire and YCU Spark scholarships from the Yayasan Canselor UNITEN, and awards from companies and foundations such as Gamuda, YTL, IOI and KPMG. Malaysian students can also use PTPTN study loans and Education Incentive Discounts for families, alumni and T20/M40 income groups.

Student life
Most students live on the Putrajaya Campus, where the university runs separate residential colleges for men (Amanah and Cendekiawan) and women (Murni and Ilmu), with food cabins, 24-hour laundry and security, and prayer rooms within walking distance of the UNITEN Mosque. The campus has a sports arena, mini stadium, swimming pool and gymnasium, along with an entrepreneurship programme that includes a student entrepreneurs' club and an annual UNITEN Entrepreneurship Award. International students are supported by an International Office that handles visas, arrival and post-arrival medical checks.

Location
The Putrajaya Campus sits near Kajang in Selangor, next to Putrajaya, Malaysia's federal administrative centre, and close to Cyberjaya. Kuala Lumpur is about 40 km to the north. The second campus is in the small town of Muadzam Shah in Pahang, a much quieter setting for business and accounting students.
