Student Life & Environment

Student experience is organized around graduate cohorts, clinical training, advising, and professional development rather than residence halls or a traditional undergraduate campus. The Counseling Psychology program is based at 1000 Dwight Way, so applicants should confirm which site they will use before estimating their commute. Berkeley places students within the wider San Francisco Bay Area and near a large network of community mental-health, healthcare, school, and social-service organizations. That regional setting is academically relevant because clinical placements may be distributed across Berkeley, Oakland, and other parts of the Bay Area or California. The Institute identifies Berkeley, Oakland, Piedmont, Emeryville, Albany, El Cerrito, and Kensington among nearby East Bay communities students may consider for housing. The school provides housing-search information rather than residential accommodation. Prospective students should therefore compare rent, transportation, and travel time to both classes and practicum sites. A location convenient for the academic building may not be equally convenient for a field placement elsewhere in the region.

For 2026–2027, MA tuition is listed at $1,310 per unit. Across the required 60 units, the published tuition total is $78,600, subject to annual change. The school estimates the same tuition total whether the program is completed in two years or practicum is deferred into a third year, though the timing of charges differs. MA students should also budget approximately $1,300 to $1,600 per year for books and readers. The official FAQ identifies federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans for eligible students and notes that scholarship and private-loan information is available through financial aid. The newest PsyD tuition schedule located during research applies to 2025–2026, not 2026–2027. It lists $43,650 per year for each of the first three years, reduced annual tuition after nine trimesters, and a separate registration fee for students who have completed academic and dissertation requirements and are at an internship site. Because those figures are dated, applicants should request the 2026–2027 schedule before making a financial commitment. Career preparation is embedded in supervised practice, field-placement advising, and licensure-oriented curricula. The MA field office maintains master's-level job postings but explicitly says the program does not provide job-placement services. Its curriculum prepares students for California MFT and LPCC educational pathways; licensure still involves post-degree regulatory requirements.
