Student life differs most sharply between the large Kattankulathur campus and SRMIST’s smaller urban campuses. At Kattankulathur, students study alongside peers from engineering, health sciences, management, science and humanities, and law. The university’s student portal connects students with academic records and, depending on faculty, hostel, transport, and financial information. Campus-life structures include student affairs, sports, cultural activities, and clubs, although participation and access can depend on faculty and campus. Residential accommodation is available at Kattankulathur in separate men’s and women’s hostels, with room types ranging across air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned options. The published 2026–27 first-year schedule for B.Tech, B.Arch, B.Des, and integrated M.Tech men lists both on-campus and designated off-campus blocks. Fees combine accommodation and mess charges, and some services, such as laundry, may be additional. Students should not assume that this schedule applies to women, senior students, medical or dental students, or another campus. The Kattankulathur prospectus describes an internal shuttle, a university library, sports and recreation provision, prayer spaces, food services, and an associated teaching hospital. The adjacent Potheri suburban railway station makes trips beyond campus practical. Applicants comparing residential options should also read the current hostel rules, because booking eligibility, conduct requirements, room allocation, and renewal are administered separately from academic admission.

Location & Surroundings

The flagship campus is at SRM Nagar, Kattankulathur, in Chengalpattu district, south of central Chennai. Although the database city is Chennai, applicants should understand that Kattankulathur is a suburban campus outside the city centre rather than a downtown Chennai location. SRMIST’s prospectus places it about 15 kilometres from Tambaram, with Potheri suburban railway station within walking distance. The same source gives approximate distances of 23 kilometres to Chennai airport and 42 kilometres to Dr. M.G.R. Chennai Central railway station. This setting offers a comparatively self-contained campus while retaining rail and road links to the wider Chennai metropolitan area. Daily travel time can nevertheless be significant, especially for central-city destinations, and students should evaluate commute patterns rather than relying only on straight-line distance. Immediate surroundings along the Chennai–Trichy corridor provide shops, food outlets, and student-oriented services. SRMIST’s other locations have distinct environments. Ramapuram and Vadapalani are urban Chennai campuses, Tiruchirappalli is in central Tamil Nadu, and the Delhi-NCR campus is in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. A program advertised by SRMIST may not be available at every location, so campus selection affects both academic access and living arrangements.

Costs & Career Outcomes

SRMIST does not have a single institution-wide tuition figure. Charges vary by award, specialization, campus, and applicant category, and examination or registration charges may be additional. As one current example—not a university-wide price—the official 2026 program page lists annual tuition of INR 425,000 for B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering with a specialization in Big Data Analytics at Kattankulathur.
