About SMU
Singapore Management University was incorporated in January 2000 as Singapore's third university, deliberately designed to differ from NUS and NTU: a city university focused on business and management. After reviewing many undergraduate business schools, its founders chose the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania as a model; Wharton helped shape the curriculum and supplied SMU's first president. SMU is publicly funded but run as a non-profit company with an independent board of trustees.
SMU teaches through six schools and two colleges: Accountancy, the Lee Kong Chian School of Business, Economics, Computing and Information Systems, the Yong Pung How School of Law, Social Sciences, the College of Integrative Studies and the College of Graduate Research Studies. In September 2025 it had 10,294 undergraduates and 3,766 postgraduates. Undergraduate teaching is seminar-based, with no more than 45 students per class, and every student can take a second major from any school.
The university sits in the Bras Basah district of downtown Singapore, a short walk from the civic district and the financial centre. It suits applicants who like to speak up in class, want repeated internship experience before graduating, and are drawn to business, law, economics or computing with an applied, industry-facing slant.
Why students choose SMU
Every SMU student is guaranteed a second major, which can come from any of the university's schools and colleges regardless of the primary degree.
All classes are small seminars of no more than 45 students, so participation is part of how you learn and are assessed.
Every student completes at least one ten-week internship before graduating, and SMU says the average student completes two to six, locally and overseas.
Global exposure is a graduation requirement, with exchange options at more than 220 partner universities, summer programmes and overseas community service projects.

SMU does not publish an overall admission rate. It describes admission as highly competitive and selective, and says meeting the minimum test scores does not guarantee an interview or offer.

How to apply
Apply online directly to SMU under the right qualification category (international applicants use 'International/Other qualifications'). Submit predicted or actual results attested by your school, upload test scores and have them sent officially (SAT code 2861, ACT 5284, TOEFL 9014). Scholarship and Tuition Grant applications are made in the same form. Shortlisted applicants are interviewed; Law applicants first sit a writing test.
What admissions looks for
- SMU runs a holistic, aptitude-based process: academic results plus qualities such as aptitude, positive attitude, intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and communication skills.
- Evidence of those qualities through leadership in co-curricular activities and impactful community service or volunteering.
- Significant awards and achievements, and relevant work or internship experience, in areas related to the course you apply for.
- For Law, strong English and writing ability, tested through a writing test before any interview.
Tips for applying to SMU
- 1 Prepare for an interview: shortlisted applicants for every course are interviewed, and SMU says only those who attend are considered further.
- 2 Law applicants face two hurdles, an in-person writing test at SMU and then an interview, and need higher test scores (SAT EBRW 700 or IELTS 7.5).
- 3 Take your SAT, ACT or English test in one sitting with every section above the minimum, because SMU does not combine scores across sittings.
- 4 Decide on the Tuition Grant when you apply: international students must request it in the application form, and it carries a three-year work obligation in Singapore.

Singapore's Ministry of Education Tuition Grant heavily subsidises fees; international students can apply for a limited, merit-based Tier C grant in exchange for working for a Singapore entity for three years after graduating, or pay non-subsidised fees with no bond. SMU says one in three incoming freshmen receive scholarships or awards, applied for within the admission form, and it runs means-tested financial aid schemes.

Bachelor of Business Management
SMU's largest degree, with 3,856 undergraduates in 2025, taught by the Lee Kong Chian School of Business.
Bachelor of Laws (LLB)
Selection adds an in-person writing test before the interview, and Law applicants need higher SAT and English scores than other programmes.
Bachelor of Science (Computing & Law)
A combined degree between the computing and law schools for students interested in legal technology and regulation.

SMU says its graduates are consistently ranked among the most employable in Singapore in the joint Graduate Employment Survey of the autonomous universities, with one of the highest mean starting salaries. SMU awarded 2,331 bachelor's degrees between September 2024 and September 2025.
Student life
SMU has no sprawling residential campus: its buildings are woven into the Bras Basah civic district, and most students commute. Life revolves around seminars, clubs and competitions, with more than 150 student clubs across arts, culture, sport, special interests and community service. International students can live in SMU's Prinsep Street Residences, 12-bed shared apartments for up to 255 students, or the yo:HA hostel at Pearl's Hill near Chinatown. Overseas stints are built in: exchange, study missions and internships abroad are part of the degree.

Housing. SMU does not guarantee on-campus housing; options include the university's Prinsep Street Residences and the yo:HA hostel at Pearl's Hill, with SMU estimating accommodation at S$250 to S$800 a month.
Location
SMU sits in Bras Basah, the museum and arts district in the heart of downtown Singapore, next to Fort Canning Park and within walking distance of the civic district and the central business district. Singapore is safe, green and very well connected by MRT, and many multinational firms have regional offices there, which makes term-time internships practical. SMU suggests an international student can live on about S$2,000 a month.

What SAT score do I need for Singapore Management University?
SMU's minimum is a total of 1350 with at least 650 in evidence-based reading and writing (700 for Law), in one sitting. Meeting the minimum makes an application competitive but does not guarantee an interview.
How much does SMU cost for international students?
For AY2026/27 entrants, international students with the Tuition Grant pay S$26,200 a year (S$30,450 for Law); without the grant the fee is S$47,700 (S$56,150 for Law). Fees are fixed for the normal four years.
When is the SMU application deadline for 2027?
