Student Life & Environment

Student life is closely tied to SCI-Arc’s open studios and architecture-focused community. The school describes its quarter-mile-long building as a connected workspace where students from different degree levels encounter one another. This differs from a conventional residential university experience: projects, critiques, exhibitions, lectures, and shared production spaces are central to campus participation. SCI-Arc does not offer on-campus housing. Students arrange independent accommodation in the Arts District or other Los Angeles neighborhoods, and admitted students receive access to portal resources listing roommates, sublets, and apartment openings. This gives students flexibility but also makes them responsible for evaluating leases, commuting, cost, and housing quality. Support services include personalized academic advising, international-student advising, career counseling, wellness and safety resources, and community and belonging initiatives. Career support covers resumes, interviews, networking, internships, and job searches. Eligible students may pursue internships for academic credit, and the school maintains a job board for internships, employment, residencies, and fellowships. International students have access to advising on immigration status and adjustment to life in the United States. Location & Surroundings

SCI-Arc is located at 960 East Third Street in the Arts District of downtown Los Angeles. The surrounding district combines former industrial buildings with residences, galleries, restaurants, cultural venues, and design businesses. For architecture students, Los Angeles provides a large and varied built environment in which to examine development, infrastructure, housing, landscape, media, and architectural practice. The campus is near Little Tokyo and within reach of neighborhoods where students commonly rent, including Boyle Heights, Echo Park, Chinatown, Silver Lake, and Koreatown. Official housing guidance notes that students live both in the Arts District and nearby communities. Public transit, bicycles, scooters, and ride-sharing can support car-free travel for some students, although commuting practicality depends heavily on where a student lives and works. Location is therefore both an academic asset and a planning consideration. Students gain access to Los Angeles’s architecture and creative industries, but they must independently manage housing, transportation, and urban living costs. Visiting the campus and potential neighborhoods before signing a lease would be particularly useful.

Costs & Career Outcomes

For 2026–2027, SCI-Arc published tuition of $29,505 per semester plus an administrative fee, student union fee, and lab fee, bringing billed tuition and standard fees to $30,305 per semester. The school estimated total tuition, fees, and other expenses at $46,345 per semester for an unmarried student over four months. That estimate included course materials, room and board, transportation, loan fees, meals, miscellaneous costs, and estimated annual health insurance. Travel to and from California was excluded. Degree-seeking students must maintain health insurance. SCI-Arc estimated its annual plan at $3,260 for 2026–2027, subject to change, and allowed a waiver with proof of comparable coverage. New international students also faced a one-time $800 fee, while new students had a one-time $70 equipment fee. Students should build a personal budget because housing is off campus and actual Los Angeles costs may differ materially from institutional estimates. SCI-Arc awards admission scholarships based on application merit and financial need. Merit scholarships are available to domestic and international applicants, while admission need-based scholarships are limited to admitted domestic students. Career services provide individual counseling, application-material reviews, interview and networking preparation, employer events, an online job board, and access to credit-bearing internships for eligible students.
