About OU
Obuda University (Óbudai Egyetem) in Budapest describes itself as a technical university for engineering, IT and economics. Its roots are in the Bánki Donát, Kandó Kálmán and Light Industry polytechnics, which merged on 1 January 2000 into the Budapest Polytechnic (Budapest Tech); the institution received university status in 2010. The university's own page says it has about 140 years of history and more than 500 international students.
It is organised into faculties named after Hungarian engineers and scientists: Bánki Donát Faculty of Mechanical and Safety Engineering, John von Neumann Faculty of Informatics, Kandó Kálmán Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Keleti Károly Faculty of Business and Management, Rejtő Sándor Faculty of Light Industry and Environmental Engineering, Ybl Miklós Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering, and Alba Regia Faculty in Székesfehérvár. Three campuses are in Budapest (Óbuda, Józsefváros and the Ybl campus), with others in Székesfehérvár and Salgótarján.
English-taught bachelor's programmes include Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Engineering Management, Industrial Engineering and Business Administration and Management; master's programmes range from Artificial Intelligence and Data Science to Architect and Mechanical Engineering. Fees depend on residency: EU/EEA students pay EUR 2,000 per semester at bachelor's level and non-EEA students EUR 2,700 to 3,200. It suits students who want a practice-oriented technical degree in the Hungarian capital.

How to apply
Apply in the university's online application system and upload certified documents, pay the EUR 150 non-refundable application fee, and take the programme's entrance exam. After review you receive a letter of acceptance (the university says within a 60-day period), then pay tuition for the semester and apply for a visa. Stipendium Hungaricum applicants apply through the Tempus Public Foundation platform instead.
What admissions looks for
- A strong background and interest in STEM fields, a good command of English and strong motivation, as the application criteria page states.
- Completed secondary school, or being in the final year with the certificate uploaded by 1 August of the application year.
- A motivation letter and CV alongside certified, translated academic documents.
- Good results in the programme's entrance exam, mostly Mathematics plus an oral exam.
Tips for applying to OU
- 1 Pay the EUR 150 application fee only through the official application system; the university warns about fraudulent acceptance letters circulating online and publishes an official notice.
- 2 Get every school document notarized, even if the original is in English.
- 3 If you apply for the Design Engineering or Architect programme, prepare a portfolio.
- 4 When transferring fees, write your name and the programme in the 'Information for beneficiary' box, otherwise the payment may not be identified.
- 5 For Stipendium Hungaricum, plan for the 2027/28 call in November 2026 and your home country's sending-partner process.

Student life
Student life centres on Budapest. The university offers two dormitories for international students: the International Member Dormitory for Stipendium Hungaricum holders and Hotel Ventura (IMD2) for self-financing students, both on the Buda side of the city. It runs orientation days for new international students, a mentor programme, mental health counselling and a Students' Union that organises events. Public transport is well developed, and the university says a monthly student pass costs HUF 3,750.

Location
Obuda University is in Budapest, a city of over 1.7 million people. The Óbuda campus sits on the Buda side of the Danube between the Árpád and Margit bridges, with other faculties in Józsefváros and on Thököly út. The university describes living costs as cheaper than most European cities and says public transport runs by bus, tram, metro and trolleybus, including through the night.
