About Mutah

Mutah University was founded by royal decree in 1981 as Jordan's third public university, after the University of Jordan in the centre and Yarmouk University in the north, to serve the south. A civilian wing was added in 1986 by a decision of the Higher Education Council. The university calls itself the university of the sword and the pen, because its military wing houses colleges such as Police Sciences, Military Sciences, and the Royal Jordanian National Defence College alongside the civilian faculties.

The university says it offers 105 academic programmes, including 53 at bachelor's level, one higher diploma, 42 master's and 9 doctorate programmes, across about 15 colleges and three deanships. Its own annual report for 2020/21 counted 19,735 students, 2,136 of them non-Jordanian from 28 countries, and 626 teaching staff. Times Higher Education's 2026 data lists 15,579 students, 13% of them international, on a different basis.

For non-Jordanians there is a dedicated International Programme at bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels, applied for through the Ministry of Higher Education's unified portal for international students at Jordan's public universities, with fees quoted in US dollars. Mutah suits students who want a professional degree in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering or law in a smaller southern town rather than Amman, and who accept that much of the university's web content is in Arabic.
