About Monash
Monash University opened at Clayton in 1961 as the first new university in Victoria in more than 100 years (it was established in 1958). It has since grown into one of Australia's largest universities, with about 86,000 students, 17,000 staff and more than 500,000 alumni in over 150 countries. It placed 31st in the QS World University Rankings 2027, its best result to date.
Monash is organised into 10 faculties, including Art, Design and Architecture; Arts; Business and Economics; Education; Engineering; Information Technology; Law; Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences; Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; and Science. Most undergraduates study at Clayton, a large suburban campus in Melbourne's south-east, or at Caulfield, which is closer to the city. Monash also has six campuses and three international teaching locations, including Malaysia and Indonesia.
Monash is known for professional and applied fields: it is ranked 2nd in the world (1st in Australia) for pharmacy and pharmacology in the QS subject rankings 2026, and in the top five in Australia across many engineering, health and business subjects. Monash is ranked 2nd in the world and 1st in Australia for Pharmacy and Pharmacology in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.
The Monash Guarantee publishes an ATAR for each course in advance (for example Commerce 77 and Engineering (Honours) 75 for 2027 entry), so eligible under-represented applicants know the target before results come out.
The Bachelor of Commerce pairs with 15 double-degree combinations, including Commerce and Computer Science, Laws and Commerce, and Commerce and Actuarial Science.

Domestic offers are made through VTAC on selection rank. 2026 lowest selection ranks were 95.00 for Laws (Honours), 87.15 for Commerce, 85.00 for Engineering (Honours) and 82.00 for Science. The Monash Guarantee ATARs for 2027 entry are Laws 85, Commerce 77, Engineering 75 and Science 72.

How to apply
Domestic students (including Australian Year 12 and IB students in Australia) apply through VTAC. International students apply directly to Monash with the course code (for example B2001 for Commerce), online or through an agent. Commerce also has July and November intakes for direct applicants.
What admissions looks for
- A selection rank at or above the course's lowest selection rank; the Monash Guarantee ATAR applies to eligible applicants.
- Subject prerequisites: for Commerce, English and Mathematics (IB equivalents: English at SL 4 or HL 3, and Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at SL 4 or Mathematics at HL 3).
- Monash uses the entire academic record for applicants with prior VET or university study, with a minimum 70% average.
Tips for applying to Monash
- 1 Check whether you qualify for the Monash Guarantee (for example through an under-represented school); it can get you in well below the lowest selection rank.
- 2 The Law Pathway in Commerce is excluded from the Guarantee and needs an ATAR of 90+.
- 3 If you miss the entry score, completing the Monash College Diploma of Commerce is an official pathway into the Bachelor of Commerce.
- 4 A-level applicants: Monash counts A* the same as A (5 points) but awards a maximum of 1 bonus point for an A*.

Student life
Clayton is a large, green suburban campus with its own residential village of halls (Briggs, Campbell, Holman, Jackomos, Logan and Turner), shared flats and studio apartments. The Monash Student Association (MSA) supports, funds and resources more than 100 clubs and societies at Clayton, and there is a campus radio station. Clayton is a suburban campus, so many students find their community through halls and clubs; Caulfield is closer to the city.

Clayton is a suburb in Melbourne's south-east, at the centre of the Monash Technology Precinct, which Monash describes as the largest employment hub outside the Melbourne CBD.
