About JCU
James Cook University (JCU) began in 1961 as a university college in Townsville and became an independent university in 1970. It focuses on the challenges facing the tropics, and its main campuses are in Townsville and Cairns in North Queensland, with further campuses in Singapore and Brisbane. Its 2025 Annual Report counts 21,123 students across all JCU campuses; 16% of students at the Cairns and Townsville campuses were international in 2024.
JCU's best-known strengths come from its location. Marine science students study coral reefs, seagrass and mangroves and use the Orpheus Island Research Station on the Great Barrier Reef, and JCU ranks 10th in the world for marine and freshwater biology in US News. It also offers medicine, dentistry and veterinary science in North Queensland, and runs the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine. Teaching is organised into colleges, including Medicine and Dentistry, Science and Engineering, Healthcare Sciences, and Business, Law and Governance.

Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science use a separate selection process.

How to apply
Australian school leavers apply through QTAC. International students apply directly to JCU online (or through an agent) for undergraduate and postgraduate coursework. Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science have separate, earlier deadlines and require a written application.
What admissions looks for
- An ATAR or equivalent at or above the course's entry score threshold.
- Recommended or prerequisite school subjects for the course, such as Chemistry and Mathematics for Marine Science.
- English proficiency at the band set for the course.
- For Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science, a written application as part of a separate selection process.

JCU's Townsville campus sits at the heart of a tropical health and knowledge precinct, while Cairns students study in a rainforest setting; both are close to the Great Barrier Reef. Location
Townsville is North Queensland's largest city, a tropical coastal city on the Coral Sea with warm weather most of the year and access to the Great Barrier Reef and Magnetic Island. Cairns, JCU's second main campus, is a gateway to the reef and the Daintree rainforest. Both cities are smaller and more relaxed than Australia's state capitals.
