About IUT
Isfahan University of Technology (IUT) is a state university under Iran's Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, about 20 km northwest of Isfahan. Planning began in 1974 and teaching started in 1977 with about 800 students; according to Wikipedia it was designed with the help of MIT and modelled partly on MIT and the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle. The university occupies 2,300 hectares at the foot of Seyed Mohammad Mountain, 400 of them for a main campus laid out like a small town.
IUT focuses on engineering, basic sciences, agriculture and natural resources. Its faculties cover chemical, civil, electrical and computer, industrial, materials, mechanical, mining, textile and transportation engineering, plus chemistry, mathematics, physics, natural resources and a College of Agriculture with ten departments. The university's facts page lists about 10,500 students, including 3,400 graduate students, and 550 faculty members.
Undergraduate and master's teaching is in Persian. Iranian students are admitted through the national entrance examination, while international students apply directly to IUT and must earn a Persian language certificate before starting a bachelor's degree. How to apply
International applicants apply online or by emailing the completed IUT application form, English translations of transcripts and diplomas, a passport copy, a photo and visa application forms to the international office before the deadline. The department decides on admission; admitted students then send originals certified by the Iranian diplomatic mission, two recommendation letters and further copies, and register on the Ministry's student affairs portal before enrolling with a student visa.
What admissions looks for
- A strong previous academic record: IUT names applicants' grades, completed courses and degrees as the most important factor.
- At least a 13/20 average on the secondary and pre-university diplomas, with more than 13 in the faculty's key courses.
- Officially approved diplomas and approval from Iran's diplomatic representation or Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Acceptable Persian, shown by a certificate from an approved centre before starting a bachelor's degree.
Tips for applying to IUT
- 1 Plan for the Persian requirement early: a 3 to 6-month course is needed before bachelor's study begins, unless your previous education was in Iran.
- 2 Aim for the 15 October deadline if you want to start in February; otherwise apply by the end of May for September.
- 3 Have your transcripts and diplomas translated into English for the application, and later certified by the Iranian embassy in your country.
- 4 Budget in US dollars: tuition is charged per semester and final enrolment requires proof of payment for tuition, housing, food and insurance.

Student life
IUT is a residential campus 20 km from Isfahan city, laid out like a small town with a shopping centre (Pardis), a central library with 24-hour study halls, a health centre and dining halls serving three meals a day at subsidised prices. Residence halls house more than 4,000 students in shared studios: Sadaf for women, and Al Qadir and Sadra for men. Each department has an elected scientific association that organises industry visits, and clubs cover music, theatre, film and photography, literature, podcasts, nature tours and Red Crescent volunteering.
