About IIT Hyderabad
IIT Hyderabad began teaching on 18 August 2008 in a temporary campus and moved in 2015 to its permanent campus at Kandi in Sangareddy district, outside Hyderabad. It was set up with technical and financial assistance from the Government of Japan, and the institute describes a special relationship with Japanese universities and industry that continues today.
The institute reports more than 5,750 students across bachelor's, master's and PhD programmes, with about 60% at postgraduate or doctoral level, so it is research-heavy for its size. Undergraduates choose between the BTech and the BDes. Departments range from Artificial Intelligence (IITH launched India's first BTech in AI), Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical and Aerospace, Civil and Chemical Engineering to Biomedical Engineering, Heritage Science and Technology, Climate Change, Design and Liberal Arts.
IITH uses a 'fractal' academic system with continuous assessment, short courses and a wide choice of electives, including liberal and creative arts. The institute says it has supported more than 320 start-ups through its incubators and filed over 580 patents. Admission to the BTech is through JEE Advanced and JoSAA counselling; foreign nationals can take JEE Advanced directly for supernumerary seats.

IITs do not publish an acceptance rate. BTech seats are allotted through JoSAA by JEE Advanced rank; only the top 250,000 candidates (all categories) in JEE Main are eligible to sit JEE Advanced.

Round 5 allottees had to upload documents and pay the seat acceptance fee by 5pm on 20 July 2026. The 2026 BTech and BDes batch reported to IITH on 20 July, with classes from 27 July 2026.

How to apply
Indian applicants sit JEE Main, qualify for JEE Advanced and then fill choices on the JoSAA portal, which allots IIT seats by rank over several rounds. Candidates allotted a seat upload documents and pay a seat acceptance fee. Foreign nationals register for JEE Advanced directly. For postgraduate study, foreign nationals can also apply through ICCR or Study in India.
What admissions looks for
- A JEE Advanced rank good enough for your chosen programme's closing rank.
- Eligibility for JEE Advanced: a top-250,000 JEE Main result, age limit (born on or after 1 October 2001 for 2026, with five years' relaxation for SC, ST and PwD) and at most two attempts in consecutive years.
- Class XII with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
- For foreign nationals, a JEE Advanced rank that is at least the programme's closing rank.
Tips for applying to IIT Hyderabad
- 1 Plan for two attempts at most: JEE Advanced can be taken only twice, in consecutive years.
- 2 When filling JoSAA choices, weigh IITH's newer programmes (such as AI) against branch preferences at older IITs.
- 3 Foreign nationals skip JEE Main but pay much higher tuition: 3,00,000 rupees a semester, against 1,00,000 for regular students.
- 4 Budget for hostel and mess costs: all UG students are expected to live in the hostels.

Tuition is fully waived for SC, ST and PH students. All students pay semester charges (registration, exams, gymkhana, medical, IT and other fees of 14,675 rupees), a 1,000-rupee welfare fund, and one-time fees of 19,000 rupees, including a 6,000-rupee refundable deposit. IITH says alumni contribute to scholarships.

Student life
IITH is fully residential: all undergraduates are expected to live in hostels, with first-years usually in shared rooms and single rooms later. The campus at Kandi is spacious and green, with a Scrap Art Amphitheatre and Miyawaki forest plantations. Student life is run by the Sunshine Gymkhana student council, and the highlight of the year is Elan and nVision, the annual techno-cultural festival held in January or February. The BHARATI programme pairs first-year students with faculty mentors on hands-on engineering projects.
