About IIT Delhi
IIT Delhi was established as a College of Engineering in 1961, declared an Institution of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963, and renamed the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. It is one of 23 IITs and has powers to set its own curriculum, run its own examinations and award its own degrees. More than 60,000 people have graduated from the institute, including over 15,700 with B.Tech degrees and about 5,070 PhDs.
Teaching and research run through departments such as Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics and Humanities and Social Sciences, alongside schools including the School of Artificial Intelligence, the Kusuma School of Biological Sciences and the School of Public Policy. Undergraduates choose four-year B.Tech programmes in fields from Computer Science to Textile Technology, or five-year dual degrees in Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Mathematics and Computing.
Entry is among the most competitive in the world: seats go through JoSAA by JEE (Advanced) rank, and foreign nationals compete for supernumerary seats capped at 10% of each course. IIT Delhi suits mathematically strong students who want an intense engineering education, a large research environment and a strong placement record.
Why students choose IIT Delhi
Placement outcomes: of 946 students in the four-year UG cohort graduating in 2023-24, 711 were placed, at a median salary of Rs 19.08 lakh a year (NIRF 2025 data).
Tuition is heavily means-tested: Indian students with family income of Rs 1 to 5 lakh pay one-third of the tuition fee, those under Rs 1 lakh and all SC, ST and PwD students pay none.

Selectivity
IIT Delhi does not publish an acceptance rate. In 2026 only the top 2,50,000 JEE (Main) candidates could sit JEE (Advanced), and IIT seats are then allotted by rank through JoSAA. Foreign nationals get supernumerary seats (up to 10% of each course) only if their rank is at least as good as the programme's OPEN closing rank.

How to apply
Indian nationals take JEE (Main), register for JEE (Advanced) if they are in the top 2,50,000, then take part in JoSAA counselling and choose IIT Delhi programmes. Foreign nationals register for JEE (Advanced) directly and are considered for supernumerary seats through JoSAA. DASA is not a route into IITs: it covers NITs and other institutes only.
What admissions looks for
- A high JEE (Advanced) rank: seats are allotted strictly by rank and category through JoSAA.
- Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class XII, with 75% aggregate or a top-20-percentile board result.
- For foreign nationals, a rank at least as good as the programme's OPEN closing rank.

Merit-cum-Means scholarships go to about 25% of engineering and technology undergraduates with annual family income up to Rs 8 lakh: Rs 4,000 a month plus exemption from tuition, renewable with an SGPA and CGPA of at least 6.0. The Institute Free Studentship waives tuition for a further 10% of students on means alone, and SC, ST and PwD students are exempt from tuition.

Student life
IIT Delhi is fully residential for most students, with hostels (13 listed on the international office site: 10 for men and 3 for women) each running its own mess for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Student Activities Centre and the Mittal sports complex host clubs, gyms and indoor games. The campus sits between the Qutub Minar and Hauz Khas monuments in south Delhi, so historic sites, markets and cafes are close by. Undergraduate life is intense: grades matter for scholarships, which require an SGPA and CGPA of at least 6.0.

Location
The campus lies in Hauz Khas, south Delhi, next to Jawaharlal Nehru University and within reach of the Qutub Minar and the Hauz Khas monuments. Delhi is India's capital, a vast city with an extensive metro network, a huge range of food and markets, very hot summers and cool, sometimes smoggy winters. The campus is a self-contained residential community within the city.
