Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is a public, autonomous Institution of National Importance in Hauz Khas, New Delhi. Established as the College of Engineering in 1961 and renamed IIT Delhi after the 1963 legislative amendment, it has statutory authority to set academic policy, conduct examinations, and award degrees. The institute offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral study across engineering, technology, design, sciences, management, public policy, economics, and the humanities and social sciences. Entry routes differ substantially by level and program: undergraduate applicants commonly enter through national examinations and centralized allocation, while postgraduate and doctoral programs use program-specific eligibility rules, examinations, and selection procedures. The urban residential campus supports research, student organizations, sports, housing, and structured career services, although institute housing is limited and an admission offer does not guarantee a hostel place.

About Indian Institute of Technology Delhi

IIT Delhi operates as an autonomous statutory institution within India’s public higher-education system. It was established as the College of Engineering in 1961, became an Institution of National Importance under the 1963 amendment to the Institutes of Technology Act, and adopted its present name. Its Board of Governors oversees the institution, while the Senate controls academic standards, curricula, examinations, and related policy. This governance structure gives IIT Delhi substantially more academic autonomy than an affiliated college. The main campus is in Hauz Khas in South Delhi. IIT Delhi’s official history emphasizes training, research, and development in science, engineering, and technology, but its academic scope also encompasses physical sciences, management, design, public policy, economics, and humanities and social sciences. The 2026–27 prospectus confirms that the institute remains fully operational across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. Prospective students should view IIT Delhi as a specialized, research-oriented institution rather than a comprehensive university offering every conventional discipline. Its strengths and admissions systems are closely connected to India’s national technical-education framework. Applicants should therefore compare the exact degree, department, entrance route, funding category, and campus-accommodation terms relevant to them. Rules for a B.Tech entrant, an M.Tech applicant, an MBA candidate, a research-degree student, and a foreign national can differ materially.

How Admissions Work

Undergraduate and postgraduate admissions follow different systems. IIT Delhi’s 2026–27 undergraduate entrant page covers students admitted through JEE Advanced 2026, the 2025 preparatory route, and UCEED 2026. The applicable route depends on the award: applicants should consult the examination authority and centralized allocation process for eligibility, registration, ranking, choice filling, document verification, and seat acceptance. Meeting an examination threshold does not by itself guarantee an IIT Delhi place. For Semester I of 2026–27, IIT Delhi ran a separate application process for Ph.D., M.Tech, M.S. by Research, M.Des, Master in Public Policy, M.A., and selected M.Sc. programs. The published deadline was 11 April 2026 for national candidates and 30 March 2026 for foreign-national candidates; those dates describe that completed cycle and must not be reused for a later intake. Graduate requirements differ by program and may include a relevant prior degree, national examinations such as GATE or JAM, academic screening, a test, an interview, or other departmental criteria. MBA and other specialized programs may operate through separate admissions pages and schedules. International applicants should use the foreign-national instructions rather than assuming domestic examination and fee rules apply. All applicants should verify the current intake, category rules, qualifying degree, required examination, document format, and funding status directly from the relevant brochure. Housing should be planned separately because admission does not ensure a hostel allocation.

Academic Experience

IIT Delhi’s 2026–27 materials describe a multi-level academic portfolio. Undergraduate entrants can study in B.Tech, combined B.Tech and M.Tech, B.Des, and B.S. programs. Postgraduate provision includes M.Tech, M.S. by Research, M.Des, M.Sc., M.A., MBA, Executive MBA, Master in Public Policy, and doctoral study. Availability and admission routes vary by department, centre, and semester, so applicants should use the current program brochure rather than treating this as a single common application system. The institute’s academic base is strongest in engineering and technology, supported by science, design, management, policy, and humanities and social-science units. The Senate has responsibility for curricula, courses of study, examinations, and academic standards. This matters for students who value an institution able to revise its own curriculum and integrate coursework with laboratories, projects, and research. Research degrees are a substantial part of the academic structure. Full-time Ph.D. students may receive teaching or research assistantships under prevailing government and institute rules, subject to eligibility, progress, and restrictions on equivalent outside funding. M.Tech, M.S. by Research, and M.Des students may also receive assistance in exchange for teaching or research support. These arrangements should be checked against the applicant’s admission offer because funding is not uniform across every category. Students considering IIT Delhi should examine the current curriculum for the exact award, required courses, program duration, research expectations, and rules governing changes of program. The database’s broad program list should not be interpreted as confirmation that IIT Delhi offers a conventional degree in every listed subject.

Student Life & Environment

Student life is organized through institute-recognized bodies covering recreation and creative activities, sports, hostel management, student welfare, publications, and academic interaction. Official prospectus material identifies clubs for music, dance, dramatics, debating, literature, photography and film, fine arts and crafts, quizzing, wellness, Hindi activities, and SPIC MACAY. Rendezvous is the institute’s student cultural festival, while organized sports include inter-hostel and inter-IIT participation. The campus has indoor and outdoor sporting facilities, including fields, courts, a running track, a swimming pool, gym facilities, and the Mittal Sports Complex. Availability may depend on schedules, team use, and institute rules. Hostels have elected student representatives working with faculty wardens and the Board for Hostel Management. This cooperative model gives residents a role in mess, cultural, sports, maintenance, and common-room matters. Housing is nevertheless a significant planning issue. IIT Delhi states that hostel capacity accommodates only a little over half of enrolled students based on its published July 2023 reference point, most places are shared, and accommodation is not compulsory. An offer of admission does not guarantee a hostel seat, students cannot choose a particular hostel or room through the allotment process, and some postgraduate residences have separate eligibility and charges. Students without an allotment may need to arrange and budget for private housing.

Location & Surroundings

IIT Delhi’s main campus is in Hauz Khas, a well-connected part of South Delhi. The official address is Hauz Khas, New Delhi 110016. This is an urban setting with access to the wider capital region’s research organizations, companies, cultural institutions, government bodies, and transport network. The IIT Delhi station on the Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line provides direct access near the academic area. Hauz Khas station, an interchange between the Yellow and Magenta lines, is about 2.5 kilometres from campus. Official visitor information places New Delhi Railway Station at roughly 15 kilometres and Indira Gandhi International Airport’s domestic and international terminals at approximately 12 and 15 kilometres respectively; actual journey times vary considerably with traffic and the chosen route. Campus residence can reduce daily travel, but limited hostel capacity means some students must live elsewhere. Applicants comparing off-campus options should account for rent, deposits, utilities, personal safety, and commuting time rather than assuming that admission includes accommodation. Delhi’s heat, monsoon conditions, winter air quality, and seasonal travel disruption are also practical considerations for students relocating to the city.

Costs & Career Outcomes

Costs vary by degree, entry year, nationality, student category, and housing assignment. IIT Delhi publishes separate academic fee circulars, including a 2026-entry B.Tech and dual-degree schedule and a Semester I 2026–27 circular. Applicants should use the circular attached to their own cohort and offer rather than relying on a single university-wide tuition figure. Hostel seat rent, institute-residence charges, mess payments, deposits, and air-conditioning charges are separate or category-dependent. Mess charges are estimates that can be adjusted against actual expenditure, and off-campus students must budget independently for Delhi housing and transport. Financial support is available but conditional. IIT Delhi’s current financial-assistance page says Merit-cum-Means support is offered to about 25% of eligible engineering and technology undergraduates and students in M.A., M.Sc., and M.P.P. programs whose annual family income is up to INR 800,000. It lists a tuition exemption plus INR 4,000 per month for eligible General, OBC, and EWS recipients, subject to annual income evidence and minimum SGPA and CGPA requirements. SC, ST, and PwD students receive tuition-fee exemption, while research and selected professional postgraduate students may qualify for assistantships under applicable rules. Career support is coordinated by the Office of Career Services through placements, internships, workshops, and employer engagement. In the ongoing 2025–26 placement season, IIT Delhi reported 1,275 offers, including pre-placement offers, for more than 1,140 individual students by December 2025. These are interim institutional figures, not a placement rate or salary guarantee, and outcomes vary by program, eligibility, skills, and market conditions.
