Student Life & Environment

Campus life is closely connected to an intensive research environment, but students have formal recreational and representative structures outside their departments. The IISc Gymkhana supports indoor and outdoor sport, dance, music, and other cultural activity. IISc introduced a revised fee structure for students joining in 2026–27, effective 1 August 2026. For General, EWS, and OBC entrants, the published annual tuition was INR 80,000 for BS (Research), INR 200,000 for B.Tech., INR 20,000 for Ph.D., and INR 15,000 for M.Tech. (Research). Other master's programs have different tuition and, in some science programs, separate bench fees. Students also pay specified academic, Gymkhana, emergency-fund, insurance, deposit, hostel, and mess-related charges where applicable. The full official table should be used for budgeting because totals differ by program and category. The Institute stated that reserved-category and EWS students would receive support toward tuition waivers or reimbursement under the 2026–27 change. Fellowship availability and eligibility depend on the program, funding rules, and admission category; applicants should verify the current award rather than assume that every student receives a stipend. Housing costs also depend on room type and category, while food and personal expenses require separate planning. Career support is centralized through the Office of Career Counselling and Placement.
