Indian Institute of Science is a public, deemed-to-be university in Bengaluru focused on advanced education and research in science, engineering, design, and management. Established in 1909 through a partnership involving Jamsetji Tata, the Mysore royal family, and the Government of India, it now admits students at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. Its 2026–27 portfolio includes research-oriented bachelor's degrees, taught master's programs, M.Tech. by research, integrated Ph.D. routes, and Ph.D. study. The academic environment is organized around broad scientific and engineering divisions, with interdisciplinary centres connecting fields such as computation, sustainability, nanoscience, bioengineering, and public policy. Applicants should examine the rules for their exact program because entrance routes, selection methods, fees, and application calendars differ substantially.

About Indian Institute of Science

IISc was formally established in Bangalore on 27 May 1909. Its creation followed Jamsetji Tata's proposal for an institution devoted to scientific research and higher education, supported by the Mysore State and the Government of India. The first students arrived in 1911. Today, the University Grants Commission recognizes IISc as a deemed-to-be university, and the institution remains active, with a full 2026–27 admission cycle. The Institute is best understood as a specialized research university rather than a broad comprehensive university. Its central emphasis is science and technology, supplemented by programs and research in design, management, policy, and emerging medical sciences. Undergraduate options advertised for 2026–27 include the four-year BS (Research) and B.Tech. programs. Postgraduate choices span M.Sc., M.Tech., M.Des., M.Mgt., M.Engg., joint and sponsored programs, while research routes include M.Tech. (Research), integrated Ph.D., Ph.D., and the External Registration Programme. This structure suits students seeking close contact with research and technically demanding study. It also means prospective students should not rely on generic program lists: not every commonly offered university subject is available as a standalone degree at IISc. The official admissions notice and program pages should be treated as the controlling sources for current departments, eligibility, and selection. IISc operates from Bengaluru, with a large, established campus containing academic departments, research facilities, residences, health services, recreation, and student-support offices.

How Admissions Work

Admissions for 2026–27 are program-specific. IISc's notice covers undergraduate, postgraduate course, and research programs beginning in August 2026. The BS (Research) application used designated national entrance routes, while B.Tech. admission was conducted through JoSAA 2026 rather than the IISc application portal. Applicants to postgraduate and research programs faced separate requirements tied to their qualifying degree, national examination results, department, and admission category. Depending on the program, selection may include examination scores, shortlisting, a written test, an interview, or combinations of these. The central postgraduate and research deadlines published for the August 2026 intake largely fell in March or April 2026, with later extensions for particular categories. BS (Research) applications opened on 1 May and were ultimately extended to 7 June 2026. These dates describe the 2026–27 cycle and should not be reused for a later intake. As of August 2026, several main portal routes were already marked closed. International and OCI applicants must use the category and process applicable to their status; IISc directs them to dedicated international-admissions guidance. Applicants in the final year of a qualifying program could apply for many 2026–27 routes if they expected to complete degree requirements by 31 July 2026 and provide the required certificates by the stated later deadline. Because eligibility varies sharply, candidates should read the exact current program page before paying an application fee or relying on an entrance score.

Academic Experience

IISc organizes its academic work across Biological Sciences; Chemical Sciences; Electrical, Electronics and Computer Science; Interdisciplinary Sciences; Mechanical Sciences; Physical and Mathematical Sciences; and Medical Sciences. Departments and centres cover areas including biochemistry, ecological sciences, chemistry, mathematics, physics, aerospace engineering, civil engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, materials, computational and data sciences, nanoscience, bioengineering, climate, energy, and sustainable technologies. At undergraduate level, the four-year BS (Research) provides a science-based research pathway, while the 2026–27 admission notice also lists B.Tech. programs. Postgraduate course programs include M.Tech., M.Des., M.Mgt., M.Sc., M.Engg., joint M.Tech., and selected sponsored or online formats. Research education includes M.Tech. (Research), Ph.D., integrated Ph.D., and external registration options. These credentials have distinct eligibility and selection rules; applicants should verify the particular department, specialization, and mode rather than assuming one common graduate process. The breadth lies primarily within scientific and technological disciplines, not across the full liberal-arts or professional spectrum. Interdisciplinary centres allow work across conventional department boundaries in areas such as data science, infrastructure and transportation, water, energy, cyber-physical systems, and society and policy. The admissions notice directs applicants to separate program pages for current specializations, research areas, eligibility, and selection procedures. This is important because some applicants are shortlisted through national examinations, some face interviews or written tests, and some routes depend on a qualifying degree or sponsorship category. Academic fit should therefore be judged at department and supervisor level, especially for research degrees.

Student Life & Environment

Campus life is closely connected to an intensive research environment, but students have formal recreational and representative structures outside their departments. The IISc Gymkhana supports indoor and outdoor sport, dance, music, and other cultural activity. Facilities described in the latest fully accessible student handbook include grounds and courts for several sports, a gymnasium, swimming pool, indoor games, a recreational library, and club spaces. The Students' Council represents the student community and coordinates with the Institute on hostels, amenities, activities, and other campus concerns. Student housing and mess services operate on campus. Accommodation is governed by allotment policies and may vary by program, room type, and availability; newly admitted B.Tech. students, for example, are told that accommodation is available subject to policy and is normally shared in the first two years. Applicants should not assume a particular room configuration before receiving an allotment. The 2026–27 fee circular separately lists hostel charges, deposits, and other required payments. The campus also has a Health Centre serving students, along with counselling, grievance, ombudsperson, academic-integrity, safety, and international-student resources linked through the Student Corner. Prospective students should expect a community dominated by science and research rather than the scale or subject mix of a conventional multidisciplinary university.

Location & Surroundings

IISc is in Bengaluru, Karnataka, on a historic campus originally supported by a land grant from the Mysore State. The main campus lies in the northern part of the city, about six kilometres from Bengaluru's central railway and bus terminals and approximately two kilometres from Yeshwantpur railway station; an official Institute document places Kempegowda International Airport about 35 kilometres away. Actual travel times can vary considerably with Bengaluru traffic. The location places students within one of India's largest technology and research centres. For study decisions, the practical advantage is access to a city with a substantial scientific, engineering, startup, and industrial ecosystem. The tradeoff is urban congestion, so students living off campus should assess commuting routes carefully rather than judging distance alone. Within the campus, academic departments, laboratories, residences, messes, sports grounds, the library, Health Centre, student-activity spaces, shops, and banking facilities form a comparatively self-contained setting. The campus's long institutional history and extensive greenery give it a different atmosphere from a compact city-centre college, while Bengaluru remains accessible beyond its gates.

Costs & Career Outcomes

IISc introduced a revised fee structure for students joining in 2026–27, effective 1 August 2026. For General, EWS, and OBC entrants, the published annual tuition was INR 80,000 for BS (Research), INR 200,000 for B.Tech., INR 20,000 for Ph.D., and INR 15,000 for M.Tech. (Research). Other master's programs have different tuition and, in some science programs, separate bench fees. Students also pay specified academic, Gymkhana, emergency-fund, insurance, deposit, hostel, and mess-related charges where applicable. The full official table should be used for budgeting because totals differ by program and category. The Institute stated that reserved-category and EWS students would receive support toward tuition waivers or reimbursement under the 2026–27 change. Fellowship availability and eligibility depend on the program, funding rules, and admission category; applicants should verify the current award rather than assume that every student receives a stipend. Housing costs also depend on room type and category, while food and personal expenses require separate planning. Career support is centralized through the Office of Career Counselling and Placement. Its services coordinate internships and full-time placement activity for eligible students across undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral cohorts. Participation is governed by office rules and does not guarantee employment. Research students should evaluate careers more broadly than campus recruitment alone, including doctoral study, postdoctoral work, research organizations, industry research and development, entrepreneurship, and technical or analytical roles aligned with their department.
