About Gazi
Gazi University is a public university in Ankara. Its international office dates it to 1926, when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk founded it; Wikipedia adds that it began as the Gazi Education Institute. That teacher-training origin still shows: the Gazi Faculty of Education sits alongside Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Architecture, Science and Sport Sciences.
The university's Turkish-language prospective-student page describes 12 faculties, 3 vocational colleges, 5 graduate institutes and 39 research and application centres, with 286 laboratories. It lists 1,070 professors, 381 associate professors, 322 assistant professors, 457 lecturers and 1,054 research assistants. Its international office (page updated January 2024) gives about 37,000 registered students and, in the same text, 11 faculties and 35 research centres, so the two official pages differ slightly. The central library holds 378,051 volumes, and the university reports 174 student societies with about 22,000 members.
Most teaching is in Turkish. For programmes taught partly or fully in a foreign language, the School of Foreign Languages runs a proficiency exam, and international students entering Turkish-medium programmes sit a Turkish proficiency exam. Gazi suits students who want a large, city-centre Turkish state university, are comfortable studying in Turkish, and are interested in teaching, engineering, health sciences or architecture.

How to apply
International applicants apply online through Gazi's international student application system. Upload a passport ID page, a headshot, the high school diploma with a notarised Turkish or English translation, the official transcript, the exam score you are evaluated on (TR-YOS, IB, etc.) and the receipt for the 100 US dollar application and evaluation fee. Originals are submitted on site if you are placed.
What admissions looks for
- Meeting the minimum score in a recognised diploma or exam, which the university calls the bare minimum, not a guarantee.
- A score high enough for the programme quota: places are given by ranking applicants on the submitted score.
- For sports, music and arts programmes, passing the performance or aptitude test.
- For Turkish-medium programmes, proficiency in Turkish, tested by the university's Turkish language centre.
Tips for applying to Gazi
- 1 Choose one evaluation document (diploma, transcript or exam result) and upload that one: the university says only the uploaded document is evaluated.
- 2 If your country holds the TR-YOS, applicants from its high schools must apply with TR-YOS results.
- 3 Check whether your programme teaches in Turkish or partly in English, because it decides which proficiency exam you take in September.
- 4 Have your diploma translated by a notary into Turkish or English before you apply.
- 5 The Turkish Ministry of Education equivalence document is not needed at application; it is submitted only if you are placed.
