About ESPOL
ESPOL was created by executive decree on 29 October 1958 and started teaching on 25 May 1959 with 51 students in two classrooms of a historic building in Guayaquil. Today it is a public polytechnic based on the Gustavo Galindo campus on the edge of the city, where the site covers roughly 724 hectares according to Wikipedia. Its own figures for the 2025 academic year list 9,811 students, 986 professors (277 with a PhD), 16 research centres and 142 laboratories.
The university has 34 current undergraduate degree programmes, taught mainly in Spanish. They sit in eight faculties covering engineering (electricity and computing, mechanical and production, earth sciences, maritime and ocean sciences), natural sciences and mathematics, life sciences, social sciences and humanities, and art, design and audiovisual communication. ESPOL reports that 13 programmes hold ABET accreditation and 20 hold EUR-ACE accreditation.
Entry works differently from most universities. Applicants register nationally, sit ESPOL's entrance exam (aptitude 30 percent, subject knowledge 70 percent), and are placed in a course for a specific degree. A place first leads into a levelling course (curso de nivelacion) rather than straight into the degree. The process is open to Ecuadorian citizens wherever they live and to foreigners who already live in Ecuador. It suits students who want a technical degree in Ecuador's largest port city and are comfortable with Spanish and competitive exams.

ESPOL publishes no overall acceptance rate. Places are limited per degree and allocated by application score (entrance exam plus academic record), so competitive degrees need a higher score. ESPOL has not published dates for the 2027 access processes. These are the 2026 dates for the second academic period and should be treated as the previous cycle. The FAQ describes an intensive levelling course between February and April and regular courses from May to August and from October to January, so more than one intake exists each year.

1) National registration through the Ministry's single register (2 to 13 June 2026 in the last cycle). 2) Internal ESPOL registration on the Academico Admisiones platform, choosing up to three degrees. 3) Sit the entrance exam. 4) Apply to degrees in your assessed knowledge area (first application, then a second application for degrees with spare places). 5) Accept your place and enrol in the levelling course.

Free tuition (gratuidad) is the main form of support at this public university, subject to the rules in ESPOL's FAQ: it covers the first enrolment of the first levelling programme and is not available to people who already have a public third-level degree or an active historical place in the national admission system. ESPOL's FAQ points to its fee regulation (Reglamento de aranceles, matriculas y derechos para el nivel de admisiones y nivel de grado) for the amounts payable when gratuity is lost; the PDF host (dspace.espol.edu.ec) was unreachable on 30 Sep 2026 and no archive copy exists, so no fee amounts are given. Student life
ESPOL's main site is the Gustavo Galindo campus on the Via Perimetral on the edge of Guayaquil, so many students commute. New students begin with the levelling course, which acts as a shared first stage before degree classes. The university lists student sports and recreation, the FEPOL student federation, a job bank, digital badges and an alumni network among its services, and holds a campus tour each year for prospective students.
