About DUT
Dalian University of Technology (DUT) was founded in April 1949 as the School of Engineering of Dalian University, months before the People's Republic was declared, and describes itself as the first new-style regular university the Communist Party created to build China's industry. It became independent as Dalian Institute of Technology in 1950, took its current name in 1988, and is a Project 211, Project 985 and Double First-Class (category A) university under the Ministry of Education.
DUT is an engineering-first university: its Double First-Class disciplines are Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering and Technology, and it runs national key laboratories in fine chemicals, coastal and offshore engineering, structural analysis and CAE software, and high-performance precision manufacturing. It has about 50,000 students, split almost evenly between undergraduates and postgraduates, across the main Lingshui campus in Dalian, the 129 and Development Zone campuses, and the Panjin campus.
For international students, DUT offers 10 English-taught bachelor's majors, from mechanical engineering and intelligent construction to pharmacy (some on the Panjin campus), plus a wide range of Chinese-taught majors. All applicants need a CSCA transcript. It suits engineering-minded students who want a strong research university in a mild, coastal city.

Why students choose DUT
Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering are national Double First-Class disciplines, backed by four national key laboratories.
Ten bachelor's majors are taught in English, including Mechanical Design & Manufacturing and Automation, Intelligent Construction and Bioengineering (DUT-BGI).
Joint institutes with the University of Leicester and Belarusian State University offer English-taught degrees in applied chemistry, pharmacy, applied physics and engineering mechanics.

Selectivity
DUT does not publish an admission rate for international undergraduates. The School of International Education reviews each application, with the CSCA result as one of the essential materials; if an applicant cannot prove English, the department may assess it by interview or written test.

These are 2026-intake dates. DUT's 2026 guides were published in October 2025; if the pattern holds, applications for September 2027 should open around November 1, 2026. Take the CSCA early so your transcript is ready when you apply.
How to apply
Take the CSCA first, then apply online at iso.dlut.edu.cn: upload notarised high school diploma and transcripts, language certificate, CSCA transcript, a self-statement and study plan of at least 600 words, a recommendation letter from your principal or a teacher, the Foreigner Physical Examination Form and blood test report, passport pages, a no-criminal-record certificate (or signed undertaking), and a bank certificate of at least 50,000 CNY for self-funded students. The application fee is 800 CNY.
What admissions looks for
- A valid CSCA transcript in the subjects your major requires, which DUT calls one of the essential materials for review.
- A high school diploma and full transcripts showing strong academic achievement (and 'excellent academic achievement' for the Presidential Scholarship).
- Language readiness: HSK 4 or 5 at 180+ for Chinese-taught majors, or TOEFL 80 / IELTS 5.5 / Duolingo 100 for English-taught majors.
- A clear self-statement and study plan of at least 600 words and a teacher or principal recommendation.
Tips for applying to DUT
- 1 Check the DUT CSCA subject table before booking: English-taught engineering needs Mathematics and Physics, while Bioengineering (DUT-BGI) needs Mathematics and Chemistry, in English.
- 2 Several English-taught majors (Applied Chemistry, Pharmacy, Environmental and Ecological Engineering, Process Equipment and Control Engineering, Foundations of Mathematical Science) are on the Panjin campus, not in Dalian; check where you will live.
- 3 Apply for the Presidential Scholarship at the same time; bachelor's applications close June 30.
- 4 Get your medical form stamped correctly: DUT rejects physical examination forms missing pages, a photo with a cross-page stamp, or the doctor's and hospital's stamps.

The DUT International Students Presidential Scholarship offers bachelor's students a full scholarship (tuition waiver and free on-campus accommodation) or a partial scholarship (tuition waiver only); applicants need excellent academic results and must be under 25. DUT also administers Chinese Government Scholarships, International Chinese Language Teachers (CIS) Scholarships and the Liaoning Government Scholarship (for doctoral students).

Student life
DUT's main Lingshui campus sits between hills and the sea in Dalian's Ganjingzi district. International students can live in the International Student Dormitory, with en-suite single or double rooms, shared kitchens, laundry and a study lounge, or in cheaper Nanshan Dormitory single bedrooms. The Central Canteen Hall alone has three student canteens and an ethnic canteen serving pilaf, beef noodles and lamb chops. Campus traditions include an annual performance competition, a New Year concert by the school orchestra, a carnival, a university track meet and a long-distance race every December, and there are dance, drama and folk art troupes.

Location
Dalian is a port city at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula in north-east China, with a long coastline, many islands and a climate DUT describes as neither extremely cold in winter nor extremely hot in summer. It is a shipping and logistics hub, has hosted the Summer Davos meeting several times, and is about an hour's flight from Beijing.
