About CUMT

China University of Mining and Technology traces its roots to the Jiaozuo School of Railroad and Mines, founded in 1909. After moves to Tianjin, Beijing and Sichuan it settled in Xuzhou in 1978 and took its current name in 1988. Its former Beijing graduate school became the independent China University of Mining and Technology-Beijing in 2003. Today CUMT reports to the Ministry of Education, is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Emergency Management and Jiangsu Province, and is a Double First-Class university.

CUMT is the only university in China with 'mining' in its name, and energy and resources run through everything it does. It has about 24,200 full-time undergraduates, 15,200 master's and doctoral students and 1,100 international students across two campuses, Nanhu and Wenchang. Teaching is split among schools including Mines, Safety Engineering, Resources and Geosciences, Mechanics and Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Environment and Spatial Informatics, plus economics, public policy, architecture, humanities and sports.

For international undergraduates, most programmes are taught in Chinese, but Mining Engineering, Safety Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are also taught in English. From the 2026-27 year, every bachelor's applicant needs CSCA scores. CUMT suits students who want engineering tied to energy, mining safety, geoscience or the environment at low cost: bachelor's tuition is CNY 13,800 to 14,600 a year.

CUMT's Mineral and Mining Engineering has been in the QS global top 50 for nine years running and ranked 14th in the world in 2025.

Mining Engineering, Safety Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are offered as English-taught four-year bachelor's degrees.

Selectivity

CUMT does not publish an admission rate for international students. Bachelor's applicants are selected on their CSCA subject scores, and humanities applicants also have an interview.

Testing Required from 2026-27: the CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment). Mathematics is compulsory for every programme; science and engineering programmes also need Physics or Chemistry; Chinese-taught programmes need Professional Chinese (Humanities or STEM Chinese). English-taught applicants are exempt from Professional Chinese and take the tests in English.

How to apply

Register at ic.cumt.edu.cn, pay the CNY 400 (US$60) application fee and upload your passport, high school diploma and transcripts (notarised translations if not in Chinese or English), CSCA score report, HSK or English certificate, a Foreigner Physical Examination Form and a non-criminal record certificate (both within six months). After materials review, applicants may sit an online entrance exam and interview; admitted students receive an admission notice and JW201/JW202 form for the X1 student visa.

What admissions looks for

CSCA results in Mathematics and the Physics or Chemistry test required for your programme; admission ranks candidates on subject scores.
For Chinese-taught programmes, HSK 4 at 210 or above plus CSCA Professional Chinese.
For English-taught programmes, IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 85 or Duolingo 110.
A completed high school education, a clean criminal record and a recent health check.

Tips for applying to CUMT

1 Check the CSCA subjects for your major before booking: business, public administration, English, sports and design programmes need only Mathematics (plus Chinese), while engineering programmes also need Physics or Chemistry.
2 If you want the English-taught route, choose Mining, Safety or Mechanical Engineering, and take the CSCA Mathematics and science tests in English.
3 CUMT scholarships for bachelor's students are awarded mainly on CSCA scores, so a strong CSCA can cover your full tuition.
4 Humanities and Arts applicants should prepare for an interview.

CUMT reports more than 430,000 graduates since its founding and was named a national advanced unit for graduate employment by the State Council in 2012.

Student life

International students live in two apartment buildings (No. 8 and No. 17) on the Wenchang campus, with about 500 rooms, mostly twin rooms with air-conditioning, heating, private bathrooms, shared kitchens and a laundry. The Nanhu campus is known for its greenery, with 65% vegetation cover. The International College runs an annual International Cultural Festival (the 11th opened in 2025), festival events such as Dragon Boat Festival activities and trips to Han-dynasty heritage sites around Xuzhou. The campuses have 16 canteens, 2 gyms, 4 sports fields and dozens of outdoor basketball and tennis courts.

Location

Xuzhou is the northernmost city in Jiangsu province, halfway between Beijing and Shanghai, and about 2.5 hours from either by high-speed train. It is known as the birthplace of Han dynasty culture, with many historic sites nearby. CUMT highlights the city's low cost of living: Xuzhou has been named one of China's 'happiest cities' five times and won the UN-Habitat Award in 2018.
