It offers two-year, full-time Master of Fine Arts and Master of Architecture programs built around independent studio practice, critique, and close mentorship by each program’s Artist-, Designer-, or Architect-in-Residence. Students choose among ten programs spanning art, craft, design, and architecture. The Academy is part of the larger Cranbrook Educational Community, a historic 319-acre campus that also includes an art museum, science museum, and college-preparatory school. Its relatively unstructured educational model is most appropriate for applicants who already have a developed portfolio, can define their own lines of inquiry, and want sustained studio time rather than a conventional schedule of classes. Official materials confirm that Cranbrook awards master’s degrees only.

Student Life & Environment
Student life is closely integrated with studio work. Program heads live on campus, and many students use Academy dormitories located near their studios. Dorm rooms are modestly furnished with an extra-long twin bed, dresser, and desk; bathrooms are shared by floor. Common lounges and central laundry facilities provide shared residential space. Each program also has a kitchen available to both on-campus and commuting students. Two Cranbrook Educational Community dining halls ordinarily serve meals according to the Cranbrook Schools calendar, so closures and private events can affect availability. Students should review the current service schedule and budget separately for food. The 2026–27 financial-aid budget lists limited double-occupancy dormitory space at $4,375 for the academic year and single occupancy at $7,528, plus a refundable $200 damage deposit. Studio Council includes representatives from each program and organizes events, workshops, and visiting-artist activities. Student services include six counseling visits per academic year at no charge, disability-support coordination, and career-development resources. The campus community is small and specialized rather than comparable to a large undergraduate university, making program relationships, studio access, and Academy-wide cultural events central to the experience.
Location & Surroundings
Cranbrook is at 39221 Woodward Avenue in suburban Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, within the Detroit metropolitan area. The Academy occupies part of the 319-acre Cranbrook Educational Community, whose art museum, science museum, schools, historic buildings, gardens, and collections create an unusually concentrated cultural setting. The campus is a National Historic Landmark associated particularly with Eliel Saarinen’s architecture and planning. This is a landscaped, campus-based environment rather than a dense urban arts district. Detroit’s museums, galleries, artist communities, architecture, and design and manufacturing networks broaden the regional context, but students should plan transportation carefully. The official 2026–27 cost-of-attendance budget includes transportation as an estimated indirect expense, and students living off campus must account for both housing and commuting. Applicants who can visit should use the opportunity to inspect their intended program’s studios and fabrication resources, understand distances around the campus, and compare dormitory life with off-campus housing. Students arriving from outside Michigan should also include airport transfers and local travel in their personal budgets.
Costs & Career Outcomes
For 2026–27, incoming students are charged $51,250 in tuition and $1,960 in mandatory fees. Returning second-year students are charged $49,250 in tuition and $2,010 in fees. International students must carry health insurance and are assessed an additional $2,246 insurance charge for that academic year. These figures exclude food, supplies, books, personal expenses, transportation, and some department-related costs. The official first-year cost-of-attendance document should be used to build a complete budget rather than treating tuition as the total price. All accepted applicants are considered for non-need-based institutional aid without a separate application. Cranbrook reports partial-tuition scholarships across its programs, more than 50 merit scholarships based on portfolios, and up to ten full-tuition Gilbert Fellowships. US citizens and eligible permanent residents seeking need-based aid must submit the 2026–27 FAFSA. An award may combine grants, loans, and Federal Work-Study, but institutional funding is not guaranteed merely by admission. Career support includes Professional Practices presentations, workshops and classes, job and residency postings, consultation with program heads, and individual help with résumés, CVs, artist statements, and grant applications. Cranbrook does not publish graduate employment or salary statistics. Applicants should consequently assess likely outcomes through their intended field, portfolio goals, alumni and professional networks, and anticipated borrowing rather than relying on an institutional placement rate.
