About BUPT
Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) was founded in 1955 as the Beijing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications and took its current name in 1993. It is a national university run under the Ministry of Education and co-built with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and it describes itself as a research university with information technology as its defining feature.
The university's own profile (data updated to November 2024) lists more than 28,000 full-time bachelor's, master's, doctoral and international students, about 1,700 full-time teachers and 19 teaching units. These include schools of information and communication engineering, electronic engineering, computer science, cyberspace security, artificial intelligence, integrated circuits and economics and management, plus an International School run jointly with Queen Mary University of London. In the Ministry of Education's discipline evaluation, information and communication engineering is rated A+, and computer science and technology and electronic science and technology are rated A.
BUPT suits students who already know they want telecommunications, networks, computing, electronics or security, and who are comfortable studying in Chinese or in one of the few English-taught options. Most undergraduate teaching for international students is in Chinese, so the HSK language requirement matters as much as your academic record.

How to apply
Apply through BUPT's online international-student application system (bupt.17gz.org), then submit the documents the page lists: application form, highest diploma and transcripts, physical examination record and proof of Chinese or English ability. After approval BUPT issues an admission notice and visa application form (JW202) for a student visa. Applicants to the China Scholastic Competency Assessment register separately at csca.cn.
What admissions looks for
- A foreign-nationality applicant with a high-school diploma for bachelor's study, as stated on BUPT's archived international-student page.
- Chinese language at HSK level 4 for Chinese-taught programmes, or TOEFL 80 for English-taught ones.
- Applicants who fall short on Chinese may still be considered and can first enrol as non-degree students for a year of Chinese, according to the archived page.
Tips for applying to BUPT
- 1 Confirm with BUPT's International Student Affairs Office whether your target programme requires a CSCA score; the CSCA site says each university sets its own use of the scores.
- 2 Plan for HSK level 4 early, because most undergraduate teaching for international students is in Chinese.

Student life
BUPT's main campus is on Xitucheng Road in Haidian, with a second campus in Changping. International students are managed by an International Student Affairs Office, and an archived 2021 page described two dedicated international dormitories with 24-hour hot water, a shared kitchen and Wi-Fi. The university's English pages also listed a university club and association directory and, at that time, a summer programme in July for international students covering Chinese language and visits to technology companies in Beijing. Its International School is a joint venture with Queen Mary University of London.

BUPT's main campus is at 10 Xitucheng Road in Beijing's Haidian district, one of the capital's main university areas. A second campus is in Changping.
