About UB
Universitas Brawijaya (UB) is a state university in Malang, East Java. The President authorised it by telegram on 11 July 1961, and it became a state university on 5 January 1963. It is named after the title of the kings of Majapahit. The university says it has more than 60,000 students across vocational, bachelor's, master's, doctoral, professional and medical specialist programmes. Its faculties range from Law, Economics and Business, and Engineering to Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Computer Science, and Fisheries and Marine Sciences.
Most Indonesian students enter through the national routes: SNBP, based on school records, and SNBT, based on the national UTBK computer-based test. UB's own independent (Mandiri) selection is the third route. Regular degrees are taught in Indonesian. The International Undergraduate Program (IUP) offers English-taught classes in subjects such as Medicine, Law, Accounting, International Relations and Civil Engineering, with double-degree, exchange and internship links to partner universities abroad.
Non-Indonesian applicants apply directly to UB and are selected on their academic record, usually without an entrance test. UB suits students who want a large, comprehensive public university in a mild-climate student city, and international students looking for an English-taught degree in Southeast Asia at a moderate price.

The International Undergraduate Program teaches in English and links programmes to partners abroad, for example the University of Manchester and Kyushu University for Medicine, and the University of Queensland for International Relations and Communication Science.
Indonesian students' fees (UKT) are set in eight bands; the lowest band pays IDR 500,000 a semester in every programme, including Medicine.
The Brawijaya International Student Scholarship (BISS) covers tuition, a living allowance, a university-affiliated dorm, health insurance, visa fees and a one-time return flight.
Malang sits on a plateau between volcanoes including Arjuno, Semeru and Bromo, and its average annual temperature is about 25°C.

Selectivity
UB publishes seat numbers rather than an admission rate. For 2026 it offered, for example, 700 Law places (140 via SNBP, 210 via SNBT) and 320 Medicine places (64 via SNBP, 96 via SNBT), with the rest filled through its own Mandiri selection.

How to apply
Indonesian students apply through the national SNPMB system (SNBP or SNBT) or through UB's Mandiri and IUP selections on admisi.ub.ac.id: pay the registration fee with a payment code, fill in the form and upload transcripts, a CV, a motivation letter, and guarantee and commitment letters. IUP applicants then sit an online English test and an interview (in person for Medicine). International applicants apply online through the UB International Office portal with transcripts, English (or Indonesian) proficiency evidence and a passport copy.
What admissions looks for
- Strong academic performance in senior high school, judged on school records for SNBP and international applicants.
- For SNBT and the UTBK-based Mandiri route, results in the national UTBK test.
- For the IUP, English ability shown in UB's online test, plus motivation shown in the motivation letter and interview.
- For non-Indonesian applicants, English (TOEFL ITP 500 or IELTS 5.5) or Indonesian proficiency to match the programme.
Tips for applying to UB
- 1 Choose your IUP study programme carefully: once you request the payment code, the programme cannot be changed.
- 2 Plan your IUP English test set-up: you need a laptop for the test plus a smartphone for Zoom monitoring, in a closed, brightly lit room.
- 3 Medicine IUP interviews are held in person; interviews for other IUP programmes are online.
- 4 International applicants should apply for the Brawijaya International Student Scholarship early; it covers tuition, housing, a living allowance and a return flight.

Student life
UB's main campus is on Jalan Veteran in Malang, with sports and student-activity facilities at the Dieng campus, including the Pertamina Sport Arena and Samantha Krida Hall. The university runs a bus fleet, student dormitories, an international student dormitory, a mosque, a halal canteen, a health clinic and UB Hospital. Student life is organised through student activity units covering faith, sports, arts and special interests. Most people in Malang get around by motorcycle, angkot minibuses or ride-hailing apps.

Malang is the second-largest city in East Java, about 85 km south of Surabaya, on a plateau surrounded by mountains including Arjuno, Semeru and Bromo. Its average annual temperature is about 25°C, and it is known as a city of education with many universities. Local food includes bakso, rawon and cwi mie. Motorcycles dominate the streets, and ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to get around.
