About BJUT
Beijing University of Technology was set up in 1960 in the industrial south-east of Beijing, with the job of training engineers for the capital's industries. It was among the first Chinese universities allowed to award master's degrees (1981) and doctorates (1985), joined Project 211 in 1996 and entered the national Double First-Class list in 2017. It is run and funded by the Beijing municipal government, which shapes its stated mission: 'Rooted in Beijing, Serving Beijing'.
Engineering is the core, but BJUT now teaches across science, economics, management, law, literature, art and education. It reports 67 undergraduate programmes, 22 first-level doctoral disciplines and 34 teaching and research units, and says 11 of its fields are in the global top 1% of the ESI citation rankings, with Engineering and Materials Science in the top 0.1%. As of June 2026 it had 20,769 students, 11,343 of them full-time undergraduates, and 2,245 full-time teachers.
The main campus sits at Pingleyuan in Chaoyang District, by the East Fourth Ring Road, and hosted the badminton and gymnastics events of the 2008 Olympics. International students are a small group (209 enrolled in mid-2026), and most bachelor's degrees are taught in Chinese, so BJUT suits applicants with solid Chinese who want an applied engineering, computing or architecture degree in the capital at a moderate fee.

Selectivity
BJUT does not publish an admission rate for international students. Applicants who pass the initial document review are invited to an interview (online or in person) before pre-admission. Chinese students are admitted through the gaokao.

Apply through the embassy or consulate and name BJUT as your chosen university.
BJUT had not published its 2027 international admission guide as of September 30, 2026. For 2026 entry, applications for Chinese-taught degrees ran in two windows (November 1, 2025 to January 16, 2026, and February 23 to May 31, 2026) and until June 15, 2026 for the English-taught programme, so expect applications for September 2027 to open around November 2026. Plan your CSCA session early, since each window only accepted certain test sessions.
How to apply
Take the CSCA first, then apply online at bjut.17gz.org with your passport, high school diploma and transcripts, CSCA scores, HSK certificate (or English test for the English-taught programme), CV, Foreigner Physical Examination Form, non-criminal record certificate and a financial guarantee with bank statement. Pay the non-refundable CNY 500 application fee, attend an interview if you pass the first review, and check pre-admission results online; admission notices were issued from 1 July in 2026.
What admissions looks for
- A completed senior high school education with full transcripts.
- CSCA scores in the subjects your major lists, such as Physics for engineering and computing majors or Chemistry for Chemical Biology.
- Chinese at HSK 4 or above for Chinese-taught degrees, or the stated English scores for International Economics and Trade.
- A successful interview after the initial document review.
Tips for applying to BJUT
- 1 Apply in the first window if you can: in the 2026 cycle it opened on November 1 but only accepted CSCA scores from the December session, so register for the CSCA early.
- 2 If you lack HSK 4 or CSCA scores, BJUT recommends a one-year self-funded preparatory course at its partner institutions, Northeast Normal University or Huaqiao University, applied for alongside your BJUT application.
- 3 Architecture and Urban and Rural Planning take five years instead of four, which adds a year of fees.
- 4 Mind the age limit: undergraduate applicants must be between 18 and 25, and anyone under 18 on September 1 needs notarised guardianship documents from a guardian in China.

International undergraduates can apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship through a Chinese embassy or consulate, and for the Beijing Government Scholarship through BJUT. The Beijing Government Scholarship has three categories: A covers tuition, accommodation, living expenses and medical insurance; B covers tuition, accommodation and insurance; C covers tuition and insurance.

Student life
Life centres on the Pingleyuan campus, where the gymnasium built for 2008 Olympic badminton still stands, alongside ten canteens, including halal and Western-style options, and a library with more than 3,000 seats open 105 hours a week. BJUT reported 88 registered student clubs with over 8,000 members in 2019, plus a student art ensemble with a choir, symphony orchestra, Chinese orchestra, dance and drama troupes. For international students, the long-running International Day is the main shared event, and the international student apartments house nearly 400 people with study rooms, kitchens and laundry.

Location
BJUT's main campus is in Chaoyang District in south-east Beijing, by the East Fourth Ring Road, with further campuses in Tongzhou and elsewhere in the city. It is close to Beijing's embassy and business district, and the capital's museums, historic sites and metro network are within easy reach. Beijing has cold, dry winters and hot summers.
