About AUT (Tehran Polytechnic)
Amirkabir University of Technology, still widely known as Tehran Polytechnic, traces its formation to 1956, when it was set up to expand two technical institutions of the time, the Civil Engineering Institute and the Higher Art Center. Its first students were admitted in 1957 through an internal exam, and it officially began teaching in 1958 with five engineering majors: electronics and electrical, mechanical, textile, chemistry and civil engineering. In 1979 it became a university and was renamed after Amirkabir Farahani, a figure in Iran's modern history who sought to develop the country's technology and industry.
Today the main campus on Hafez Avenue in central Tehran has 18 departments, from electrical, computer, mechanical and aerospace engineering to polymer and color, textile, mining, maritime and petroleum and geoenergy engineering, plus mathematics and computer science, physics and chemistry. It also runs campuses in Mahshahr, Bandar Abbas and Garmsar and a Kish International Campus, along with research institutes in areas such as aerospace, new technologies and oil and gas.
International applicants are admitted directly by the university under rules set by Iran's Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, but all teaching is in Persian, so non-Persian speakers first complete Persian language courses.
