African Leadership University is a legally recognized private higher-learning institution in Rwanda. Ministerial Order No. 008/2016 granted the institution accreditation and separate legal personality, while Rwanda's Higher Education Council included ALU in its 2025 list of operating higher-learning institutions. The university identifies its official name simply as African Leadership University; “Rwanda” describes the campus and distinguishes it from the separate African Leadership College in Mauritius. The Kigali institution opened its doors to its first class in September 2017. Its current address is in Bumbogo, at Kigali Innovation City, next to Azam. This is a newer location than the Kigali Heights premises described in older materials, so applicants should use the current address when planning a visit. ALU's current undergraduate entry framework requires completion of final secondary-school national examinations at A-level or an equivalent level, together with English proficiency at CEFR B2 or above. Applicants whose qualifications were earned outside Rwanda, or through a non-NESA system in Rwanda, generally need a Rwandan equivalence certificate. The institution distinguishes applicants who completed secondary school before 2024 from those assessed under Rwanda's newer grading framework. Program conditions differ. Under the published post-2024 criteria, Entrepreneurial Leadership requires an Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education with an overall pass of at least 50%, or its recognized equivalent. Direct entry to Software Engineering additionally requires at least 60% in mathematics or a computer-related subject. Its indirect route uses specified science performance plus ALU's internal mathematics test. International Business and Trade requires relevant secondary completion and mathematics performance; an indirect route is available for applicants with stronger results in specified business-related subjects who also pass the internal mathematics test. Accepted English evidence includes IELTS 6, TOEFL iBT 72, Duolingo English Test 100, Pearson PTE 54, or another listed B2-level credential. Applicants should use the live program page for dates because official ALU pages displayed inconsistent September 2026 deadlines during this review. As of August 20, 2026, that intake had already begun or closed. The individual Entrepreneurial Leadership, Software Engineering, and International Business and Trade pages advertised January 2027 entry with a November 1, 2026 deadline.

ALU currently presents three bachelor's options at its Rwanda campus: the BSc (Hons) in Entrepreneurial Leadership, BSc (Hons) in Software Engineering, and BSc (Hons) in International Business and Trade. English is the language of instruction. The institution organizes its academic year into three trimesters and describes its undergraduate education as combining disciplinary study with a common leadership foundation, skills development, projects, and practical experience. The Entrepreneurial Leadership program is an accelerated three-year course spanning business, social science, product design, data analytics, entrepreneurship, and leadership development. Software Engineering is also designed for three years. Its academic material emphasizes the software-development lifecycle, engineering design, ethical practice, work-based skills immersion, and a mission capstone. Published specialization areas include machine learning, full-stack web development, augmented or virtual reality, and low-level programming and algorithms. International Business and Trade follows a different published structure extending through a fourth year. They should also verify which modules, specializations, and delivery locations will be available to their intake before committing.

Student Life & Environment

Student life begins with an in-person first term at the Kigali campus. ALU says this period is intended to help new students meet classmates, become familiar with the learning model, and connect with faculty and staff. After the first term, the institution's broader “world is your campus” model allows more flexible learning, including participation through ALU learning hubs, subject to the requirements of the chosen program. Accommodation, meals, insurance, travel, immigration, and personal costs should therefore be budgeted separately.
